Hey.
Been home for about two years, and have been considering another tour of duty in Korea.
How is the job scene these days? I have heard a few mentions of the market not being what it used to be...how much truth is to that? Is the glory day of public schools and University over? Has the market become saturated? (I have a M. Ed., so education shouldn't be a disqualifier)
I have checked the board, but I have often found the best jobs through connections and friends. I am by no means above a lil hakwon action, but the conditions would have to be right...
Sooooooo...how does the teaching market compare to that of yesteryear?

| There are actually lots of public school jobs on offer these days, however the conditions in them aren't as a good as they used to be (oddly expanding the number of positions has meant a drop in conditions). However if you find the right school/district the good jobs are still there. |

Didn't they just announce they're going to be hiring almost 1,000 new public school teachers? |

It could be my imagination, but it seems like there is a trend toward bona fide qualifications and away from petty things like age and gender.
Apparently, directors are slowly beginning to realize that if they want a good teacher, they can't afford to concern themselves with hair color and eye color. |

If you have certification to go along with your MEd, I'd say go to Hong Kong and try to get into the NET program! The public school jobs here are a farce. DON'T do the hakwon thing!
You'll most likely not have too much of a problem getting a university job. However, it will boil down to how much you would like to make, how much vacation time you'd like, and how many contact hours you are willing to endure. The regular caveats about programs generally being unprepared to take on foreign staff still apply. It's not what it used to be. |

yes... and by bizzare logic here that means dropping pay + conditions rather than raising them. |

| i heard there's mad money to be made in saudi arabia. i'd like to teach there, b/c ive never been there and know little about it... but the middle east forum here is sucky, im not learning much. the KOREA BOARD, however, best ever! |

Koreans have very funny ideas of supply and demand.
The job market is continuing it's downward trend in savings terms. Inflation is holding steady at about 4-5% a year but salaries are stagnant. You've got a couple more years before Korea is like Japan in terms of money. I'd say, if you were going to do one year, get in and do it now. |
