i've been posting up some offers i've been getting lately, and they all seem to be trash (ive received 7-8 so far)... 8 hour working days, 1.9-2.0 million for salary, 600,000 housing deposit, the usual crap contract
anyway, i'm dying to hear what contracts all of you guys have, if u dont mind posting it up on this thread. i'd like to get an idea if the so-called "good & fair" contract actually exists:
if u can please post up:
1. salary
2. working hours
3. # of vacation days
4. what year this is for you teaching (e.g. 1st year, 2nd year, etc)
5. did u go thru recruiter or thru other avenues?
6. the name of the institution

I've got a contract that's pretty much meaningless except in so far as it qualifies me for an E2 visa. I see to my school's needs and concerns as best I can and they for the most part try to reciprocate, and we both tell the school district whatever we think they want to hear. |

thanks all, your inputs have given me some very good ideas of some of the standards.
its fairly obvious that public school jobs are the best, yet sometimes i think waking up at 7 to get ready might be killer. i'm a night owl.
anyway, im embarking on my first year and hope to work my way into a public school. |

I know many people who come on here complain about the 40 hour week that public school teachers have to put in but when you think about it, most hakwon teachers put in just about 40 hours in the school doing a "30 class hour" workweek.,
People complain that a new teacher in a public school only makes 1.8 mil per month (base salary). But what they don't realize is that for that money you are only teaching about 22 classes of 40 minutes each (880 contact minutes) per week. In a typical hakwon you do 1500 contact minutes per week.
If you ask for overtime they will arrange afternoon classes for you. If you do an extra 5 classes per week (1 per day) in the afternoons you can add an extra 400-500k won to your salary. Now you are doing 26-27 classes of 40 minutes and making ~2.2 - 2.3 mil per month.
After a year experience you move up from level 3 to level 2 (with the subsequent 200k per month raise in your salary). Take a TESOL course in your dead time (professional development) and move up to level 1 by your third year (add another 200k). Now you have a base of 2.4 mil + added classes + benefits. Even with added classes you only spend 40 hours per week in your school.
There is no worry about getting paid, you get enrolled for yor pension (which is like an added bonus for Americans and Canadians), medical, 15 days sick time, severance, holidays etc.
It used to be that working in a UNI was the job of choice. With UNIs moving toward UNIgwans I think not any more. Now their hours are climbing up (like a hakwon), benefits are going down (like a hakwon), no airfare, and lower net salary than at a public school.
To all of you who prefer working in your hakwons; power to you. "Not for me," says I. I'll take the public school. It may have its problems and politics but those are nothing compared to a hakwon or UNIgwan.
Just my 20 won worth. I'll get off my soapbox now. |

Right now is kind of the wrong season for public schools. The terms start in March and Sept. so hiring is usually done in Jan and July.
When you contact them be sure to be firm and let them know that you are ONLY interested in a public school position and NOT a hakwon.
Worknplay does a lot of public school recruitments. ( http://www.worknplay.co.kr )
I had good luck with English Korea ( http://www.engkorea.net/english/index.htm )
There are others out there as well.
You can also go directly to the 3 big programs websites to apply:
EPIK: http://epik.knue.ac.kr/
GEPIK: http://gepik.ken.go.kr/
SMOE: http://etis.sen.go.kr/ |

1. salary. 1.95 million
2. working hours. Tuesday through Friday, 1pm to 430pm. 14 hours a week, 16 classes a week. No office hours - just turn up, teach, and go home.
3. # of vacation days. None. I get national holidays off but they are unpaid. I can take unpaid vacation.
4. what year this is for you teaching (e.g. 1st year, 2nd year, etc). 5th, 1st contract at this job.
5. did u go thru recruiter or thru other avenues? Word of mouth.
6. the name of the institution. After-school program at a public elementary school.
This is the ultimate free agent job. No housing, no paid vacation, no insurance, no flight, no nothing (I do get severance, though). Still, 2.0 for 14 hours a week is hard to beat. I have clearance to work other jobs and teach at a hagwon at night, so I am banking the cash. The only better gigs out there are the unis and I am applying for those now. Hiring is seasonal (spring and fall), so look on worknplay or englishspectrum in December and January for the spring gigs. |
