Hey guys.
I'm thinking of heading more south-ish after I'm done with my contract in Seoul this summer. I like Seoul. It's totally convenient and I have the ability to pretty much go do whatever I want whenever I want. Lovely! But between my recent break-up and living here sucking money out of my wallet like a crack habit, there's not much motivating me to stay.
I'm determined to not wind up in the boonies again, so I'm looking at the "special" cities as my next possible destination. So those of you who live in Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, and Daejeon, please tell me about them. I've visited them all except Gwangju, but living there is a totally different beast.
How are they? Conveniences? Inconveniences? Things to see and do? Ability to save up? Ability to waste your money if you so desire? Boring? Fun? Freaky waegooks? Freaky Koreans? Cleaner? Dirtier? All pretty much the same as Seoul?
Give me the low-down, cats. |

| Perhaps you should only ask people who have lived in more than one city. I bet most of the people who voted for Seoul has never left the city. |

| I lived in Daejeon for a year. Not much to do there, there is an expat community and loads of bars, but no subway system. 2 train stations and a Costco, but no black market for foreign goods that I could find. Also, not many people speak English, as in no one outside of the bars. I didn't go out too much, and was able to save quite a lot. |

Daegu is very conservative but the people are friendly once they get to know you.
But, I preferred Busan overall due to Haeundae Beach, Nampo Dong and Somyeon. |

everyone is going to vote for where they live....
Seoul will be 1st
Busan will be 2nd
The others will fill out the placings...
It is hard to do an unbiased survey with the members that are here...
All cities outside seoul satisfy the same needs as Busan, just not quite on the same scale...
It all depends of what you make of it, if you are choosing the above cities it really won't matter as the situations would be similar as the things available to you are not much different(outside of perhaps some batter resaturants in busan)
Just make sure you get into a good situation, go in with a good mindset and wherever you are, it will be good... |

Seoul is a little too crowded for me. There is a lot there, but you have to fight your way to get there.
Busan is pretty good. Nice relaxing and adequate amount of foriegn food.

I thought it was clear I was asking the people in those cities.
I guess not. |

I lived in Busan for a year. Pleasant weather, nice beaches, relatively laid back. Not a bad choice.

Thanks.
Anything that I might have difficulty finding there, prompting a need to head north? |

Gqangju.
Once the english translation of the bus routes is out (next week) it's very organized getting around in the city.
It's got all the shopping, nightclubs, bookstores and other daily requirements. Pretty city. Friendly people. Good quality of live.
only 45 minutes to Mokpo is you need a beach fix. Nice hiking in the mountain. Been here since Aug. Came from JinJu. I really thought Gwangju was going to be tooooo big, but it's just right.
Gwangju International Culture Center and Speakeasy add a lot |

I've lived in Busan for almost 6 years. Count me on the biased side, but I find it more manageable for a 'big' city than Seoul, especially since they've just introduced their 3rd subway line, and are on their way to finishing the 4th.
It's also a lot cleaner than Seoul, but a bit more happening than Gwangju or Taejeon. Unfortunately, it's also the most conservative city in the country, and it shows. |
