So, here's another conference announcement I recieved. There is a five day systemics workshop before the conference starts. If you don't already have Systemic Functional Grammar training, it be would a good addition to your other ESL professional development. The conference would be cool too, of course:

Contemporary Trends in Language, Discourse, and Culture Studies

* **January 20-21, 2007*

*&*

* **Workshop on Systemic Functional Linguistics*

(Please see the following website for course description )

http://web.mac.com/cmatthie/iWeb/SMMG_resources/Amritsar_2007_Course.html

Organized by

*Department of English*
Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, Punjab(INDIA)

In Collaboration with
Systemic Functional Linguistics Association, Hyderabad

*Language, because of the multiplicity of its function, has a fugue-like
quality in which a number of themes unfold simultaneously; each of these
themes is apprehended in various settings, or perspectives, and each melodic
line in the syntactic sequence has more than one value in the whole.*

*M.A.K. Halliday*

Language, Discourse, and Culture are the key issues in recent academic
research on linguistic communication and literature. Linguistic, literary
and communication studies have transcended their conventional boundaries
that have long divided semiotics from pragmatism. Both as perspective and
methodology, discourse is in the center stage of research on language and
culture interface, and the focus is on the workings of language ideology in
relation to other social processes. The studies show in specific detail how
language ideologies underpin cultural issues, including art and culture.

As a sequel to the contemporary thrust on systemic and interdisciplinary
approaches, the *Department of English, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar,
Punjab (INDIA)* is organizing an International Workshop on Systemic
Functional Linguistics

*15-19 January, 2007*

&
