Why? The other places pay just as much. |

I like my job and almost all of the teachers there are long timers. Most of us have settled in Korea as well and invested financially in real estate, stocks, etc...My school doesn't pay as well as some universities in Seoul but the conditions you are looking for are provided. I'll PM the name of it. |

Isn't this the description of just about every professional teacher's dream job in Korea, or for that matter anywhere?
You will probably have to join the line unless you have some outstanding skills to offer. Sorry, but I think a lot of long-termers with even just a BA have more teaching experience than you outline. Also, are you aware of how few uni jobs there are these days in Korea which provide a cushy haven for MA grads? If you look at any post about unis here, it's pretty much recognized that there may be only 3-5 unis left which offer top quality employment.
Apply at the right time and you MAY strike it lucky. I don't think many on this board will fly the flags for their uni here. |

Again, "wow." I thought this was at least a semi-professional site for TESOL. I guess not. Thanks again for the advice. I do appreciate those who sent actual advice rather than jumping on the jaded negativity wagon.
Consider my question answered. |

Heh. Half the people on this site are still figuring out what TESOL stands for. |

Of course it's for what we are geared toward hearing when we return home in search of employment outside the field: "Taught English?... s.o.l." |

The really good programs you seek require more experience and/or better credentials than you have. Not trying to burst your bubble, but the people with the last of the remaining decent positions on the penninsula aren't going anywhere. Stick it out here, or work somewhere else and come back into Korea, but as it stands, you still have some dues to pay IMHO. |

If you care about profesionalism but not money, why in God's good name would you come to Korea? It's a Catch 22. |

Most likely because Korea is one of the only places left that still employs MAs at the university level en masse in Asia, not to mention that allows BAs to teach. Conditions aside, there are some positions in Hong Kong and Japan that pay more than Korean universities, but they generally insist on spot on qualifications and experience. Even if the OP is less concerned with money than the professional work environment, with his limited experience and only the MA, Korea is one of the only places he can work at the university level.
Not to worry. Korea is doing a great job of chasing the qualified and experienced serious teachers away from formal institutions and into self-employment. Others with fewer ties here are already looking for other countries in which to work and institutions with better employment opportunities. |

Actually, with only a few years experience at the university level, and an MA in English or TESOL one can find jobs all over the Middle East and Asia. It is only a matter of preference. Most of those jobs offer- housing, medical insurance, airfare, furniture allowance, etc. I know because I have a few former classmates who are teaching in Korea, Japan, China, and the Emirates. I guess sometimes it is a mix of who you know and what you know.... |
