Violence against women worse in north

OTTAWA (CP) A new study says women in the territories report higher rates of spousal violence than those living in the provinces, and police statistics also indicate they experience higher levels of sexual assault and homicide. The Statistics Canada study summarizes previously released data from victimization surveys, police services, courts and service agencies to assess the nature of violence against women.

By a margin of almost 2:1, it found spousal violence in the territories came to the attention of police more often than elsewhere in Canada; it also determined the use of shelters in the territories is the highest in the country. Overall, 12 per cent of adult residents of the three territories who have been married or had lived in common-law relationships had experienced violence by a spousal partner in the five years prior to the survey; that compares with seven per cent in the provinces.

Police data show that homicide and sexual assault rates in the territories are also the highest in the country.

The report did find that most rates of violence against women with the notable exceptions of criminal harassment and violence perpetuated by boyfriends are on the decline.
