I have started a yahoo group for Canadian expats. The goal is to have Canadians network together, help one another, and also to provide useful and interesting links for Canadians who live in Korea. There will be also room for contacts in each city. And maybe people can gather together for major events. If anyone wants to be a member, just join.

Expect no replies, for there are hardly any Canadians in South Korea, and as such it is difficult to meet them. Good luck in any case, brother! |

As an American, I often wish I had an opportunity to meet some Canadians here in Korea. But I can't find any! This club sounds like sorely needed solution to my problem! |

Waddya gonna do? Sit around and tax yourselves? Find
some seals to club? Tell each other how Canada is better
than the states (but don't mention how so many of Canada's
best talent and professionals move there) Umm, lets see:
Say "eh" a lot. Ah, here is one - Talk about great Canadian
movies!!! hahahahaha What else, watch American movies
and then jump out of your seat screaming: "he was born in
Canada you know!!!".
Actually, I'm Canadian but I find your idea ludicrous. Why
only Canadians? Are you also going to wear little red and black
armbands? |

Not a bad idea, but wouldn't it be more expedient to just pass around a clipboard at the Rocky Mountain Tavern on a Saturday night? Seriously. I mean, you have Canadians getting off the plane and going to reunions here. Still, if you think it will help out the occasional newb, then go for it. What can it hurt. |

I've met about 12 Canadians all told in Korea. I've been here about six months. I think it would be a good way to help new people who are new to Korea, people who don't know the laws, want to meet other Canadians, talk about Newfie music, hockey, Molson, politics, French, or just hanging out, and people can share information on cool places to buy certain things they happen to be looking for. But we need more members, because you can't get this thing started properly without that. Do you think there are enough Canadians in Korea for this group.
I would guess we have 15 in my city, though I don't know but a third of them.

That sounds like a good idea. You mean people will just put down their e-mails and then you sign them up. If someone could help me with that, I'd appreciate that. I don't live in Seoul. I venture there every couple of weeks. We could print a picture of the yahoo group, have a sign list and whosoever could drop it off over there, then could feed me the list or help me moderate the site and add the people themselves. If no one is willing, I will do it myself with no problem. |

There is a Canadian expat group in Texas. There are American and British meet-ups all over the world. So you are suggesting people be ashamed to be Canadian and wear American flags and burn the Canadian flag. Membership in the group is not restricted to Canadian expats, if someone from Scotland or America wants to join, they are not going to be escorted out of it:) LOL And if you are Canadian, your comment about the seals is kind of out there.
If you know anything about the maritimes, the fish stocks are small and seals eat fish. They would actually starve to death anyway if there was no seal hunt. People do kill animals to keep populations under control. This has been done in the past to alligators in Florida. Many Canadians move to the U.S, because the economy is better. What country is better is relative to the person. Just because someone from Yorkshire moves to America, it doesn't mean he or she thinks America is better than England. They just moved there. Canada's economy is much smaller than that of America's. By the way, someone from Greece would point out that an actor is of Greek descent. Heck, Anthony Quinn wasn't even Greek and they loved his Zorba role that they gave him
Greek citizenship. Canadian pride hasn't harmed anyone. |

in response to the first three replies in this thead: are you kidding me?? im assuming you must not live in Seoul...
since moving to Seoul ive probably met more Canadians than every other nationality combined. the yahoo group sounds like a good idea, but for me and most of the people i know here its a little redundant. if i want to meet up with Canadian expats i can head down to one of several local watering holes or even the weekly poker game where im guaranteed to bump into at least 5-10 canadians. |
