Hello, I am with the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Kunsan AB, and am looking for insurance for my motorcycle. I have a '76 GoldWing, 999cc. Any ideas on where I can get insurance, and how much it might cost? |

If you use the search function and type in 'motorcycles' you will get to a selection of posts. One is 'how to sell, register, licence your motorcycle' by the poster Cruisin' Along. Basically he says that you buy a year's insurance carrying your receipt from buying the bike. Then you take that proof of insurance bought to the local office and buy a plate. The insurance depends on the cost of your bike. For a bike that is 1.6 million won the insurance ends up being 150 thousand won or something. The plate is then 80, 000 or thereabouts.

From what i understand, Korean insurance only covers collision and injury for the other party. You are on your own when it comes to damage or theft of your bike and injury to you or passenger.
Can't get coverage from the base somehow? Anyone else can back this up or know more about it? Make for an interesting discussion... |

I read that post, and it will be helpful once I get insurance. There is some extra paperwork, of course, since I am in the military.
Being in the military I am covered for personal injury as long as I am not doing anything illegal or stupid, and I can buy insurance to cover the bike and passengers. This is not good enough to register the bike, however. I shipped this bike over here so have no receipt. Thanks for the responses, though.

Dwayne - just curious, but how much did it cost you to ship your motorcycle over to Korea? I'm guessing you shipped it from the States (east or west coast?)? Did you have any problems registering it in Korea, etc? |

The military ships one vehicle for you when they station you overseas. I do not know how much it will cost to register the bike yet, since I do not have the insurance. All I will need to do is take the proof of insurance, import documents, and other military documents to the DMV in Gunsan, pay the registration, and get my tags.
We have a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that covers items such as importing and registration of a vehicle. The SOFA specifies that the vehicle must ship out with the troop, or be sold only to another troop or DoD employee. If it is sold to a civilian, the troop must pay the import tax.
I brought a car with me last time, and it was a much easier process. I was at Osan AB then, however, and there are insurance companies right off base that cater to the military. Kunsan AB is much more isolated. |
