Hmm, look at the end of the article. It's a 3-part series.
Well, this is one reason Koreans have a difficult time getting visas to come to the US. And it certainly doesn't help Korea's "international image."
I don't question the motives of these human traffickers (sp?), and I understand California can be a pretty f-ed up place . . . but what strikes me as I read articles like this (or the one about the Canadian immigration official) is that something seems fishy.
Unless I'm grossly mistaken, how could a twentysomething woman from Seoul NOT know what's in store for her? "Just serve drinks?" How many bars in Seoul, or Korea, employ girls and women to "just serve drinks?" When you walk down the street, any street, in Seoul, you look around and see juicy bars, business clubs, anmas, etc., and women aren't totally clueless about these.
So, I'm no immigration expert, so I don't know what'll happen to these women now. Will they be sent back to Korea? Will they be granted economic asylum? (Don't know if that's possible for SKeans in the US). But I wonder how many women are "trafficking" themselves into citizenship. |
