SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean troops fired warning shots on Saturday after five North Korean soldiers briefly crossed into the southern side of the demilitarised zone (DMZ) dividing the peninsula, South Korea's joint chiefs of staff said.
"Our troops fired warning shots at the five North Korean soldiers after they climbed over the military demarcation line despite several loudspeaker warnings," they said in a statement.
It said they went about 30 metres across the demarcation line at around 0415 GMT and returned after the shots were fired.

So, did someone double-dog dare them to run out there?
What was the point of doing it? |

They're obviously planning to invade while the South is all drunk and stuffed for Chusok. The guys in the story obviously got their wires crossed during the invasion preparations and got shot at is all. |

In my opinion, it is like some posters here who like to 'stir the pot'. It gets them attention. The Norks like to do this around important events in the South. Remember World Cup '02? |

You're accusing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea of trolling? |

Yep. That's pretty much it. The only difference between them and say, Dev or Junior, is that when KJI shoots from the hip, he has real bullets in his gun. And some wit. |

Trolling? This from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (according to AP):
"It's not clear whether it was intentional or whether it was to catch fish," he said, adding that four of the North Koreans were unarmed, and the fifth carried a rifle. |

Were they planning to catch fish with a rifle? That'd have been pretty tough. Unless the fish were in a barrel or something. |

ONLY 40 shots fired?.....
I was stationed at Camp Bonifas for 3 months (May to August) back in 1997 and I was there during that skirmish that killed 5 NK border patrol soldiers and wounded one SK soldier. During that incident, they fired artillery across the border and completely destroyed a concrete checkpoint (nothing left but a HUGE hole in the ground).
That was when the country was close to a second war.
