Ah adages... those priceless pearls of wisdom that we garnered at our mother's knee!

But has anyone else noticed how often they seem to contradict each other.

Look before you leap

He who hesitaes is lost

Okay in a brazen attempt to piggy back on the popularity of the synonyms thread I am bringing you Opposite Adages.

The idea is simple. Post a pair of adages that you feel contradict each other.

Here's another example to get the ball rolling.

Don't judge a book by it's cover

You don't need to eat a whole egg to know if it's bad, one spoonful is sufficient

A penny saved is a penny earned.

Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

Stand your ground. -- Role with the punches.

Birds of a feather flock together. -- Opposites attract.

Get off your high horse. -- Stand proud.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. -- Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.

The early bird gets the worm. -- Good things come to those who wait.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. -- "Your mind is gone/now all is well."(Bacchae)

Don't be greedy. -- "Greed is good."(Wall Street)

A penny saved is a penny earned. -- No one likes a spend thrift.

All work and no play, makes Johnny a dull boy. -- Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me. -- Words can cut like a knife.

Turn the other cheek. -- Revenge is sweet.

Better late than never. -- A little too late is much too late.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. "Only the blind don't judge by appearances."(Nicomachean Ethics)

Great minds think alike; and fools never differ.

...

These are called "antinomies," Kant had a whole bunch of them.

Not every expression has an opposite, but one of the lovely things about life is that just about every idea or opinion does have a negation, aka: schizophrenic ambivalence.
