I translated this article (albeit roughly) about Koreans making new Korean words for terms that are usually expressed via Konglish. It was fun translating the new terms back into English.

On the 560th anniversary of Hangeul day, a national holiday, fresh attention is being paid to a collection of loanwords which are indiscriminately used in everyday life but now have been changed into Korean.
On the 8th, according to the National Language Institute, 110 loanwords have been reborn as beautiful Korean on the institutes' "Refining Our Language Together with Everybody" website (www.malteo.net).
Starting from July 2004, every week a loanword or an unclassified word that has not been put into the Korean dictionary is selected and voted upon to select a Korean word to substitute for the loanword.
The voting which takes place every week involves over 1000 netizens and the response rate is fairly high.
The most recent word to be selected and transferred is 코드 (ko-duh/code). This word, used often nowadays in words like koduhinsa and koduhjeongchi and others, was voted on by 1506 netizens from the 20th to the 25th and as a result transferred to the word 성향 (seonghyang).
In addition, the word 핫팬츠 (hotpaenchu/hot pants) which means "very short pants that stick tightly to the body worn mainly by women and children" was changed to 한뼘바지 (hanbyeompaji/short span pants). The word 피처링 (picheoring/featuring) which is used mainly in the music industry was changed to 돋음연주 (dodumyeonju/growth performance). 스킨십 (sukinship/skinship) was changed to 피부교감 (pibukyokam/skin mutual response) and 언론플레이 (eollon play/ this word refers to the manipulation of the media by a politician or celebrity i.e. the derigeur tearful public apology after a scandal) to 여론몰이 (yeolonmuli/public hunting).
A Chieolideo (cheerleader) who stirs up enthusiasm at sport games will be called 흥돋움이 (heungdodumi/interest grower), the rest area at the uppermost floor of a building, called a Sukailaunji (sky lounge) via Japanese style English, will be called a 하늘쉼터 (haneulshwimteo/sky relaxation area), Nyutaun (new town) becomes 새누리촌 (senulichon/new world village), naebigaeshyun (navigation) becomes 길도우미 (gildoumi/street helper), and bullogu (blog) becomes 누리사랑방 (neurisarangbang/ world love room) as each is refined into our beautiful language.
However, there is some sadness that such beautifully born Korean words are mostly finished at the selection stage and not widely used by the public because of lack of promotion and such.
Up to now the number of refined Korean words out of the 110 that have become known to the general public and acheived the effect of being used just as the loanwords would be is around 4 or 5 including 누리꾼/world person (netizen), 참살이/geniune living (well being) 댓글/counter writing (reply) and 여론몰이/public hunt (eollon play).
The wonjang of the National Institue for Language says, "The ultimate goal is to have the public use them but most of these beautiful Korean words are are far from being used it so it's distressing. We are currently examining several plans for more effective promotion via cooperation with members of the media or by creating a committee together with the government. [note: he managed to say this without using any loanwords except Chinese ones] |
So now we can say "Your short span pants are making me want to do a little skin mutual response with you. Can I put some pics of you up in my world love room?" |
