I'm starting to get into reggae, especially after I heard Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved" and South of Bombay's "What's the Time." For you veteran reggae music fans, what are you top ten reggae songs?

My favourite stuff is a little older than Bob Marley reggae, but it's not for hippies.

Rudy Mills - John Jones
EK Bunch - Banana
Seven Letters - Bam Bam Baji
Judge Dread - Bring Back the Skins
Bleechers - Come into My Parlour
Clancy Jones - What Will Your Mama Say
anything by Lloyd Charmers
Derrick Morgan - Conqueror
Hot Rod all-stars - Ten Commandments of the Devil
Desmond Dekker - Licking Stick

Bob Marley is the logical starting point, and there is a reason he's the best known reggae musician, but don't let it stop you from finding all the great music that's out there.

If you are starting to like Reggae, you also might like Ska and Rocksteady. Ska is where it all starts. And Ska never really goes away either, it keeps re-inventing itself. I grew up in the middle of the 2nd wave of Ska. That two-tone upbeat still gets me to my feet.

Ska (a very short list includes)
Derrick Morgan
Prince Buster
the Skatalites
The Specials
The English Beat
Madness
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Ska-core)
The Planet Smashers (Ska-core/Ska-punk???)
(even) Rancid and early No Doubt are cool Ska-punk.

Rocksteady (sorry don't know as many groups)
Toots & the Maytals (might be hard to find)
The Paragons. (also might be hard to find)
Phyllis Dillon (ya might be hard to find on CD too).

You might be able to find a CD sampler with some Rocksteady tunes.

Good luck with your exploration of Reggae. Sorry I didn't really answer your question.

Ska is great too, but ska-punk really ruins it. After ska-punk died, there've been a lot of great ska bands playing more traditional music.

I don't know...I like it all. Like I said, I was raised on 2nd wave Ska. And that was already being influenced by punk. The 3rd wave all the more so.

It's a tough call (because music is a huge part of my life); but I think Ska might be my favourite thing to listen to.

This might be a liberal interpretation of the genre, but Peter Tosh and UB40 work for me.

New Zealand's own "Fat Freddies Drop" ... it's both rootsy and futuristic, and blended with dub, funk, soul, and jazz. Wicked wicked live horns...

If you dig Bob Marley, you must have a listen to Burning Spear!

Racetraitors recommendations are all solid. Check out some of the Trojan Records compilations available for a great cross-section of classic reggae.

Yeah, maybe I should have just said Trojan Records. They have some great compilations. Probably the best are Punky Reggae Party and High Explosion.

Delirium's Brother, have you ever seen Kingston Rudy Ska?
