Can anyone help me with a list of words that some Koreans do not / can not pronounce correctly ? I can think of some but there must be many more that I have not thought of.

Eg. Words where a sound is added ...... Fish (e) English (e)
Words where a sound that should be silent, is sounded ...... Orange
Words pronounced incorrectly .......... Lemon (Remon)

An answer in this forum or via PM would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've found that some people have difficulty with certain words that begin with the letter "w" or the letter "y". Examples would be "year", "yield", "wood", and "woman". Generally, the initial letter is dropped in their pronounciation.

Any word that ends with a consonant sound other than g/k, m, n, b, ng, t/d low-level students (low-level pronunciation) will add and extra vowel syllable (hence, your 'orange' example is not a case of pronouncing the 'e', but rather not be able to pronounce the 'g' sound in an end position).

Anything with 'z,' 'f' or any multiconsonant things with the exception of 'ch' (and sometimes 'sh'). Things like 'cr', 'th,' 'st,' 'gr,' 'br,' etc.

It would be quicker to simply learn basic Korean phonics and then you would know what words are going to be a problem.

There is no simple "sh" sound in Korean for the end of a syllable. The closest you get in Korean phonics is "", which is "she".

Same deal with a "j" sound. Only the start of a syllable, not the end.

Same deal, but opposite with "L" and "R". "R" for the start of a syllable, "L" for the end of a syllable. Exception being with one syllable ends in an L and the next syllable in the word starts with the same letter, then it can start with an "L". Hello: "Hell-low" instead of "Hell-row".

Free one: "S". You can't end a syllable with a "S" sound, only start them.

The harder ones to watch out for are words that can actually be said, but the pronunciation is culturally different such as "Pizza" which is pronounced "Peet-za" in North America, but "Pee-Za" in Korean usage, even though it can be pronounced under Korean phonic rules.
