				| I'm not speaking from personal experience here but I read on here somewhere that if you don't have a guarantor it just takes a lot longer. You would think that since you've already gone through the process they wouldn't ask you to do it again. | |

				| It doesn't take longer. You just have to pay more money. You fill out a form called 'In lieu of Guarantor". You will have to give three names of references, but they don't check them anyways. | |

				| I just renewed mine two months ago and all I needed were two more "references" whom they never called and checked anyway. Did it take longer? Not at all. I had my new passport within three weeks and since I asked to have my old passport returned, it was returned in the same envelope. However, I think it's safe to say that anything you had in the old passport is no longer valid when you get the new one and you should inform immigration a.s.a.p. as to your new passport number.

				| I just had mine renewed and the morons stole my birth certificate. Apparently there is no recourse, although I am going to call and ask if they happen to have it lying around somewhere. I'm going to need to have it (or order a new one) within the next few months, so I'm pretty freaking annoyed. I'm also upset with myself for not realizing that they hadn't sent it with the new passport when it first arrived. I'm sure I would have had a better case with them if I'd called immediately. | |

				| You can get your old passport back. They will either cut off one corner, or punch it full of little holes that read "VOID" (I've had both happen to me.)
Your existing work visas will need to be tranferred to your new passport. This will require a trip to the Immigration office, with your old passport, new passport, and your ARC. You'll have to fill out some forms, but it won't take long, I had mine done in about 15 minutes. I can't remember if there were any fees involved to do this; if there were, I'm sure they were minor (maybe 10,000 won?)

The "In Lieu of Guarantor" form requires an additional fee. Basically you have to show up at the Canadian Consulate, meet the resident official there and produce some ID that proves you are who you claim to be. He/she will sign your forms and you're set to go.

By the way, it will cost more to get a passport renewed here in Korea than you would pay back in Canada. I'd advise you to get the 48-page passport while you're at it, too. I think it cost me about 150,000 at the time (2003?). Oh yeah, I got my new passport within 10 days.

Incidentally - when I had mine done, the passport I received is "...not machine readable." Wondering if anyone has had it done more recently, and if this has changed?

 Yee-HAW!

				| Canadian passports issued in Seoul are now machine-readable. You will need to sign the "In Lieu of Guarantor" form and provide two additional references, making 5 references in total you need. It takes awhile from Korea (3 weeks I think!!). | |

Oh yes they do! Everyone that I know who has gotten a passport in the last year, either with or with out the guarantor, has had all of their references checked. That's four people's applications checked out of four I know who did it this year. The checking might be randomized, or there might be other criteria, but don't assume that nobody is going to call them.
