Question out there to people living in Seoul: do Korean post offices have a "P.O. Box" system similar to that of America? I don't really trust the mailbox service where i live, and getting packages at school kind of limits my amount of privacy, so i was looking for another way to receive mail. Anyone have any advice?

It's slightly different.

The post office will not rent you a box. However, it will allow you to use one free, on the condition that you receive no fewer than thirty pieces of mail a month. If you drop below that, they will cancel your use of the box.

In Seoul there are some places like 'Mail Boxes Etc", one at least is in COEX mall where you can rent a mail box.
I think there is also a place in Itaewon doing that service too.

I went by the COEX this afternoon to see what the deal is with the PO boxes. There IS a Mail Boxes Etc. on the first floor of the coex.
For anyone who's never been to COEX, i've included pictures.



First, enter COEX from the side that's facing Bennigan's and is next to Marche'. Once you enter, walk straight until you see a bright sign that says "Mailboxes Etc" on your right side:



Walk down the narrow corridor, and you'll see MBE next to some restrooms.

They have 3 sizes. Small: W10,000, Medium: W15,000, Large: W20,000.
When you first sign on with them, you have to pay a security depost of W10,000, a membership admission fee of W3,000, and the first three months upfront. I got a small size, so my total was W43,000. After that, you're allowed to pay monthly.

Their hours are from 8:30~21:00 M-F, and 8:30~17:00 on Saturday. They say that they're the only MBE in Seoul.

By the way, for the Korean learners here: a PO box is called a 개인 사서함 or an 우편 사서함. But, since Mailboxes Etc isn't famous in Korea, most people think of a post office when they hear these words. (The Information desk wanted to send me to the Post Office on the second floor.)

Computer Solutions in Itaewon rents out boxes as well. The owner is a canuckle who has lived in Korea for a fair bit and seems to know his asshole from his elbow.

Can't remember what the rates are though and they aren't open on sunday if I recall correctly.
