|

Sometimes...errr...rarely it works properly.
I know these forurms templates are all basically the same but I find the search function on this one to be the worst I have ever dealt with.
Sometimes it shows 15000 results...none of which deal with what I searched for, other times there are a few but none of them work.
Am I missing something? If I am, just kindly let me know. |

No, you are not wrong. It does suck. But it gives the people who have been around here a while an excuse to ignore questions about living in Korea. |

Well it is rather informative and gives you posts just because a namesake uses that word in his title. |

this should be a sticky somewhere, but the phpbb search function is notoriously terrible, however, google can search a specific site for you, just add this to your google search
site:http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea
and your search results will be limited to pages from this url |

yeah, 99% of the time, i get a blank screen. i find if i only use ONE word in the search field, i come up with hits, but a million of them like the previous poster observed.
i now use the google tip, works rather well. |

Because it's really not all that useful for finding things on the site and Dave felt that you should get some pleasure while you sit in front of your screen. They're working on a lick function for female users. |

It's because a search function is extremely expensive in terms of cpu usage. Daves isn't the biggest phpbb forum on the net, but it's up there with some of the biggest. When you conduct a search, you're asking the server to search through every piece of text ever posted on this forum and to return the results.
That's the processor equivalent of maybe 200-300 people posting at the same time. It makes the board slow for everyone, and in peak times - it can cripple the server.
Many of the larger phpbb boards turn the search function off completely. Or else provide an option to google search, like splok mentioned ...
site:eslcafe.com search-term
Or dave could throw up an old P3 server to handle the search requests. There are also phpbb mods out there that will optimize the search function. |
