Dear Dave's users Very Happy

Just thought I'd let you know that our annual International Conference is coming again. This year it's going to be held between the 28th and 29th Oct - that's the last weekend of the month.

The theme this year is: Advancing ELT: Empowering Teachers, Empowering Learners.

It's held at Sookmyung Women's University in SEOUL (a 5 mins cab ride from the Seoul Railways Station or one stop by Subway).

Plenary speakers are Jack Richards, Andy Curtis and Nina Spada.

Featured include: Gillian Wigglesworth, Susan Barduhn, Chris Kennedy, Chris Candlin, Liying Chen, Melanie Graham, Marc Helgesen, Ritsuko Nakata, and Susan Stempleski.

There is also a special YL Zone for those of you in the Young Learners education/teaching field.

Conference fees are:

Pre-registration for members: 25,000
Onsite registration for members: 35,000

Pre-registration for non-members: 50,000
Onsite registration for non-members: 60,000

Membership for one year is 40,000. You can take this out at the same time as your conference registration and enjoy the pre-registration for members LOW rate.

For more information, go to http://www.kotesol.org/conference/2006/

Pre-registration is extended to 10th October. Hurry up, pre-register and get your discount now!!!

BTW, this is just for your information. ... please do not post negative comments about KOTESOL on this thread?? I believe there is already one thread about that somewhere else.

Many thanks. Laughing

Well, since you asked nicely...

Jack Richards is the guy who created that "Interchange" series, right? I'm sure that I wouldn't pay money to see him, word is he is behind the times and burned out.

Also, as far as the membership goes, I've heard some people never get their membership benefits, despite repeated requests. I've never heard a good explaination for this, so I've been quite reluctant to join KOTESOL.

Everybody has different tastes but I find Richards to be pretty engaging (and "Interchange" to be one of the better series of books.

Well, there's wisdom for ya...

Perhaps I should have said I KNOW people who have joined and not received any of their benefits.

As far as Interchange goes, I think serious students would be disappointed in both the book and the teacher who chose it for their class.

Respectfully disagree. I have over 14 years experience teaching and have taught almost every textbook out there. Also contributed to whole many.

I like the audio focus of Interchange, the task based work, the clarity of the page for the learner. Also as an addition. I like the internet grammar exercises which can be assigned as homework or done by the student individually.

I also think that for many new teachers, Interchange provides less clutter and with its thematic approach and hitting all the language modes, provides a model for them to generate new ideas to teach .....lots of methods demonstrated ....

I do agree the old interchange was in some ways better but all in all , very up to date, modern, TALKATIVE.

My disagreement stated. But I guess I just teach "non-serious " students who would rather not have grammar stuffed up their arse but really learn how to speak, leaving all those notions of dangling predicates in the waste bin of history......

No nothing. People have paid membership fees, yet there is no record of them joining up. For others, newsletters aren't sent/received, notifications of elections, basically anything sent out by mail or email. If there are more details than that, I don't know about them.

Why do you put membership benefits in quotes? You make it appear that there are none to start with.

the only benefit I can see from joining is being able to add member of professional organization for x years to your cv. I've recieved the mailings each year I've been a member, but I wouldn't have missed them if I didn't get them.

Honestly my daughter uses English connection as coloring/folding paper. Yeah, lots of paper airplanes or boats.

I didn't know if some people thought there were...I don't know, insurance, retail discounts, some other kind of "benefits." It's unfortunate that people haven't been getting their newsletters and other mailings. I often don't get them at my current address, but I have been getting them consistently.

For me, the greatest benefit has been attending chapter meetings for inspiration, networking, and fellowship. (Although one doesn't need to be a member to do this.) I have attended several local chapters and they have all been great.

heck they cant even get the agenda posted on their website 4 weeks before the conference.

My wife likes the conference just for the publishers that show up, she does free-lance editing when in the states. She'll likely go and catch up with the publishers and do some networking with them for stateside work

Me? I'd rather have a prostate exam than go to one of their conferences, I know a couple of the bigwigs and to say they are class A losers is an understatement

I have been to the conference each of my past two years in Korea. I always feel outclassed as I am 'only' a hogwan teacher. I have never encountered any other hagwon teachers at the yearly conference (but I'm not a super chatty person, so I might be missing them.) Maybe I am being oversensitive, but I end up feeling really weird about my status as a teacher. I kind of get a cold shoulder at the publishers tables, too. Disappointing.

I have wished for more young learners content at the conference. I have showed up for many workshops that sounded brilliant, only to find that the instructors experience is based with university or high school students. There is so little non-commercial young learners material. Maybe 'cause all of who teach little kids have no time to do anything like put together a seminar?

I attended the young learners symposium in March, and it was really wonderful. That alone was worth my membership.

I think Sir Richards would be quite hurt to hear such comments.

You may grumble about KOTESOL conferences, but no one is forcing you to go, right?

Overall, there is a dearth of training within schools themselves, so getting to meet many experts in the field can be the only chance for some to update their knowledge on teaching issues. I also agree, though, about having more young learner trainers available. Even just having someone of moderate experience go through a class scenario with half a dozen rowdy kids could be of valuable help to many teachers here working with kids for the first time.

Is Hamish Gilles on the list of speakers again?

You will be pleased to know that we have a special young learner's zone this year catered SPECIFICALLY for hagwon teachers.

We have been trying to lure hagwon teachers to come to our conference for a loooooooooong time to no avail. We really want this to be an all-round conference that is for everyone. So please come again and I will make sure you get introduced to some nice hagwon teachers!

Considering that KOTESOL is a volunteer organization I think they are doing just fine.

Perhaps Hogwanguy and the OP ought to put forward some of their time and effort in volunteering rather honking and whining?

Tell you what.. I will role model for you how it is done.

Hey Tzechuk. I am coming to the conference. Please PM me and let me know if you need any help what so ever.

See.. that wasn't so difficult was it?

Instead of being a catty whiner, I am instead offering some of my free time to help out something that I think could be a good thing.

Thanks, Dan!!! I will definitely PM you and let you know what you can do for us - we really need people, especially during Conference time and your help will be much appreciated!! We give out every volunteer a certificate to show that they have helped and how much we appreciate it!

Thanks a lot!!!! Very Happy
