| I'd like to pick up a new iMac (Core 2 Duo, 17" 2.0 GHz), but it seems as if it's cheaper in the US than it is here in SK. This comp with 1 GB of RAM here in SK is 1,320,000 W including VAT, whereas the same iMac from apple.com is about 1,140,000 W, not including shipping or VAT. Does anybody know how much VAT would be on a purchase like this? Anybody ordered a similar setup from the US and got burned by customs? Would it just be simpler to get it from SK, or perhaps another country here in Asia? Advice would be helpful. Thanks! |

Definitely cheaper over there. However you might as well wait, they're expected to roll out the new OS in a few months. If you can get by without it you'll likely get a lot more features then if you get it now.

I heard it was next year before the new OS was supposed to come out. If it's really that great, I can always buy Leopard, right? Well, whatever the case, I'd like to get it now rather than wait. Any ideas on which US store to order it from? |

If customs does catch it, someone was saying that they charge you double for importing it. I slipped an ipod by in a box of clothes but not sure if I could have slipped an iMac through. Might want to double check with someone who knows more about it though.

| Sigh... Amazon.com doesn't ship electronics outside of the US. I guess I'll bite the bullet and pick up one here. Hmm... one more question: are there language-specific versions of OS X, or do I need to pick up an English version of OS X as well? |

So in case anybody else was wondering, you can't legally import an Apple computer *anywhere* - no US resellers will ship it outside of the US, and it's against your purchasing terms to buy it and export it. If you need an Apple, your best bet is to get it before you arrive. Oh well. I'll still get one here, but of course the Daegu store is out of stock for two more weeks... grr...
Anybody know if hagwon teachers are eligible for Apple's educational discount? (In other words, can somebody who reads Korean check this page and let me know):

I was told (and successfully tested this in Canada) that Apple can not legally verify your status as a student. They may ask you for your student number but 1.) you do NOT have to give it to them, just say "I am a student", and 2. They can't/won't verify that the info is correct.
So if they're still giving the student discount (a couple of hundred), I'd go that route. |

Well, I still technically am a student, until I've got my diploma in hand later this month; still have my student ID; and still have a valid student ID number. I suspect it won't be a problem - except that nobody at the Apple store speaks English, so far as I know! I'll have to bring along a K-teacher, I suppose. Thanks for the info! |

It's a very, very small store; they had 2 iMacs and one Mac Mini on display. Good advice about "student" in Korean; I'll definitely make sure to do so! Thanks. |

Any chance they have any iPod accesories? I need to get one of those adapters so I can dump my photos into my iPod when the memory card on my camera is full.

It's not an issue that I'm a hagwon teacher and not a public school teacher? What do I need to prove that I'm a teacher - will an E2 visa work? |
