Would many of you consider changing Hagwons if many of the complaints you have about working for Hagwons were completely remedied? I'm not sure, but I think a more Western approach in running a Hagwon would be quite successful since the majority of the people who actually teach there are "Westerners". No traditional Korean-type informal promises, crazy hours, etc etc... Total american private-school style...with the proper administrative staff to accomodate instructor's needs. I've read most of the posts regarding the popular complaints from foreign teachers...and to be honest with you, I really think a lot of it can be avoided with the proper management. Perhaps it's a lack of communication or simple greed that causes many Korean hagwons to piss off so many teachers.

I've got the capital, the motiviation, and most importantly, the legal rights to start my own business in Seoul under an f-4 visa (i was born in Korea). The thought about starting a Hagwon has come up....and i was just wondering what kind of ordeal it would be in pursuing the realization of it. Do you think many have tried and failed, from the fact that Koreans are just too competitive in this market...suckering countless number of people into bad situations? Do you all know if the Pagoda branches are already implementing something like this?

I have no doubt you could do a better job than the typical hagwon... but financially I think its all about contacts (korean contacts).. I'd put my money into something with a better chance of success.

The biggest problem for ya would be getting a student base.

Zyzfver: did you devise your name as an example of a word that the average Korean would find impossible to pronounce? If so, let me suggest " Illirrivvy" for example.

Sakamuras, you're on an f-4 visa. That means you are a Gyopo? If so, you might have another problem. I've worked at a couple of hagwons (and have heard complaints from many others) that had a Gyopo supervisor. They are notoriously bad to work for. I'm not saying you would be but you would have to overcome that stereotype.

You give me too much credit. Last name that you'd find in the yellow pages, without getting too overboard.

Here comes Zyzyzyzyzyzzzzz.
