I need to have some documents translated, and certified to be true translations. This is to register a birth in Korea at the Canadian Embassy so the birth certificate and family registry document need translation.
Anyone know where to get this done? Anyone register a birth in Korea? |

There are places across from the Jongro Gu office (if memory serves) that do this kind of service. They're often little 'hole in the wall' places, that look more like a shoe repair service, but they'll get the job done, and it's legit. When we had our documents translated, it took about 20 minutes...the old guy just sat down at his typewriter (yes, typewriter), and started typing away. Asked us a couple questions about the spelling of names, and that was it. Didn't look fancy, but satisfied the officials at the offices. Think it cost about 10,000 won. Just look for 번역 (beon yeok), which means 'translation'.

Thanks. Asking around, apparently bun yaks (my transalation) are all over the place...
I think when I complete this process (registering a birth), I'm going to submit some sort of sticky on it... |

Your trying to make it more difficult than it is.
When the baby is born the hospital will give you the birth certificates.
They will make multiple copies for you.
Ask for 2 or 3 English ones as well as the Korean one.
The hospital and/or doctor will sign and stamp them.
Take the English copy from the hospital along with your marriage documents (to prove paternity), your Canadian birth certificate and your passport to the embassy.
You will also need 2 SETS of photos. One set for the baby's passport and one set for her birth registration. They are specific in nature and there are 2 photo shops close to the embassy that do them.
They only do registrations (and other consular services) in the mornings between 9:00-11:30am.
The baby's passport will be returned in about 3 weeks. The birth registration takes about 6 months to come back from Canada.

| Certified translators are everywhere around the City Hall area. One time I had my Chinese marriage license translated, but they couldn't do it fast, because they had to find their Chinese translator (not such a big demand I guess)... so I translated it myself and I only had to pay them for the certification fee... So, if you go and they say they can't do it (at the moment), offer to translate it yourself. |
