Have you noticed that most of the native speakers who do children's English programs on TV dress and act like clowns? There's nothing wrong with this and I am sure they are hansomely paid. BUT, why is it that the Koreans who do the shows with them do NOT dress and act like ridiculous baboons? There always seems to be a cool headed "normal" Korean, in normal dress, talking normally and then the goofy over the top white freak. And the Korean only child education programs, though fun and engaging, usually have an ordinary Korean hosting.

Any thoughts on this?

Seeing one bozo on Chuseok morning TV yesterday,I asked the wife "why's he pagaji mori"?

Wife explained that,whilst his Korean is very good,he's not funny.So he has a bowl cut for humour.

Those guys are just making a living.

I imagine, for the humiliation those native speaker actors are required to subject themselves to voluntarily, that they are paid much better for their work than a typical teacher here.

It does seem that, in general, the citizens of this country love to denigrate the dignity of any person they meet with. This is whether the person they meet is from this country or from another, but it is all the more appropriate if it is a waygookin.

It comes from 3 things.

1,Koreans were traumatised over learning English in school.When they learn to speak,they're learning the language afresh.Treat them kid gloves.

2,Making everything cute,cute.

3,Foreigners willing to look like clowns for the sake of a paycheque.

It really does say something about English education here, doesn't it? In Korea, there are two types of English, the English language and the English subject.

The English subject is to be taught by Koreans in suits who use Korean entirely as the language of instruction and teach vocab and reading comprehension only.

The English language, however, exposes so many Korean inadequacies and insecurities that it's best taught by foreign clowns being ridiculous and repeating themselves over and over and over.

Is it any wonder that Korean public school teachers and western hogwan 'teachers' are such a diffferent breed entirely? One thing we can always be sure of, however, is that Koreans will never hand over English education to people who can actually do it competently. Thank goodness there's the odd job for the foreigner who can find a happy medium between the two extremes. I wouldn't make such an ass of myself on Korean TV for 6 million a month, much less make a complete ass of myself for 1/3 that at a hogwan.

Isaac Durst Escapes From His Cage



Isaac Durst, the energetic host of Arirang TV�s English Cafe, escaped from his cage on the Arirang studio�s backlot late last Wednesday evening. As of the time of this article�s publishing, he is still on the loose. His keepers suspect he was able to climb up the rope on his tire swing, jump onto the wire fence that runs alongside his wading pool, and then scale the fence to freedom.

�I just don�t understand why he would want to escape,� said Arirang�s veteran caucasian handler Lee Soomin. �He always seemed so happy when he was on the show. Always smiling and dancing and doing whatever we told him. Sure, sometimes he would sulk and fling his feces at us, but we�d just feed him a few hamburgers and he�d be back to his normal self again.�

Authorities are particularly concerned because Isaac has miraculously learned how to speak Korean almost like a real human being. There is a concern that he might be able to use this ability to establish a bank account or have sexual relations with a Korean woman.

�I dare not think about what kind of hideous man-beast would be born if he managed to impregnate a Korean woman,� said Deputy Police Chief Lee Woosuk. �The important thing is we bring him back to his pen where he belongs.�

If confronted with Isaac, Koreans are encouraged to speak to him in a sing-song voice and repeatedly ask him, �Hi, how are you?� It is estimated that if not showered with attention, he will shrivel up and die within 48 hours.

Lee Soomin, the handler, just hopes that Durst is found. �I remember the day we got him. I told the trapper that I wanted one with blue eyes, curly hair, and the biggest nose he could find. We got Durst and he was just perfect.�
