Does anyone know have any experience buying a legit license for (English) Windows XP Pro over the counter in Seoul? I tried buying one from Microsoft online and for some undisclosed reason they made me wait a month and then told me they werent going to fulfill the order.
Im good at not getting ripped off too badly on hardware in Yongsan, but the thought of walking around there looking for legit English Windows makes me want to hurl.
I know all about BitTorrent, eDonkey, bla-bla, but I dont want to run a crack, so if youre thinking of offering that kind of advice, save your keystrokes. (Im not taking the moral high ground; in this case I need a really stable and reliable computer.) |

I would recommend walking around space nine until you find a software vendor and ask for XP in English (get pro) and make sure they give it to you in the box with the shrink wrap on.
Alternatively you could try technomart, omi.co.kr, or ebay. |

If you have a legit Korean XP ID, and can borrow an English disc (copy the disk) from a friend, the ID will work.
The disk needs to be a non-vendor disk, though (not HP, Dell, etc.). I have one, and have done this before. As long as the number is legal, it should be OK. |

What kind of XP? Just regular English XP Home? I have one that I don't need if you want it. It's still sealed. I bought off of Ebay but never used it. Wait a second...I'll take a picture of it. 50,000WON and it's yours.
***Edit*** Ah. You want PRO. Sorry. I only have home sp2.

In the Space 9 building on the 7 th or 8th (don't remember exactly) floor there is Microsoft kiosk.
They have a big sign that says MICROSOFT and they are close to one of the UP escalators. They will sell you factory sealed MS products.
XP-pro (OEM) was about 160k won and boxed was about 240k won. |

Small differences. An OEM version can only be used for a full install.
The boxed version can be used for upgrade, version change or full install.
Either way you get a licence for a single computer.
As an end user there is NO difference for you.
OEM is NOT for resale. Full box versions are able to be resold (unopened) and have full ownership rights.
IF you buy it direct from Microsoft then there is no difference. |

GEEZ!
Take that photo down. I can make out the ID number if I squint hard enough. Dude, you're asking for trouble! You may as well unzip your fly, hang out your jewels, and dance around yelling, "KICK ME!"
I have used an OEM version of Home for 2 years (SP2). I was able to buy it for $99, along with "some sort of hardware purchase, per microsoft rules." So I bought a spare fan for about $2, and they sold me the OEM version.
I bought an OEM in Korean a few months ago, and they just sold it to me outright.
Personally, I'd never bother upgrading from one version to another, anyway. I'd always rather upgrade by reinstalling entirely with the new version from an original disc. |

Just a warning: a shrink-wrapped box does not legit software make. I got ripped off paying legit prices for a sophisticated fake (it took hours of research to confirm it was fake, but I sort of knew by the smell of the box) on ebay from New Zealand (imagine my surprise/suspicion when the packeage arrives from Shenzhen!). I got a full refund, but the time spentwasn't worth the $60 I would have saved had it been real. |

I'm sorry for your troubles. That sucks.
http://www.tigerdirect.com has the legitimate copies. I bought my OEM XP Pro from them for $130USD. |

If you buy an OS from the site that I linked to, you WILL NOT get a fake. They sell OEM versions and that's why it is a bit cheaper. They're not actually supposed to sell it retail, but they get it directly from MS, so who really cares, at least it's legit. |

Exactly my point. As long as you sell it with a piece of "hardware", it's fine.
Check out Jaz's link (and others in the excellent website sticky). You'll find it. |
