So we had an air raid drill in my neighbourhood today (sirens wailing from the tops of buildings, Korean voices shouting important sounding stuff over PA systems). Not the first time it's happened since I've been here but it seemed a bit more relevant this time. I'm interested to know if anyone else has experienced this or if it is just a local thing? |

Yup, we had this too. I was near Daegu on my lunch break when it happened. At first I thought it might be the real deal, but then I noticed no one was panicking and they didn't interupt the TV. That was the first one I've heard since I've been here....
A real air raid siren is several short blasts, not one long wail, right? |

Just in case your interested...

According to this, a rising and falling sound would be used in the event of an actual attack. You'd also probably notice alot of people running everywhere, they'd probably interupt the TV and radio and there would probably be an unusual level of fighter jet activity overhead. (note: this is the system used in the States, but I'd guess it would be the same out here...) |

I heard it loud and clear here in Sanbon (Gunpo city, near Anyang). Heard fighter jets of course and also some helicopters. It's good to know the south has a huge military ready to respond in minutes. Although I knew it was just a drill (those white flags with the triangles warn us for a possible drill) I noticed my heart was maybe beating a bit faster than usual. The little girl in my classroom who was awaiting class, when asked, didn't know what those sirens were... she thought they were for "firemen" or something... so I basically smiled, nodded, and said "yep, that's right." While in my mind, I was thinking it'd be pretty hard to put out a fire the size of Seoul. |

To be honest Korea is ill prepared for an artillery attack on the city, never mind a nuke. Where are the bomb shelters?? You'd think that after a 50 year standoff they'd have got something ready.
I've been under a sustained rocket bombardment twice before. Fortunately we had dug an underground shelter in our yard.
My Grandmother lived through the blitz in London, she said that ultimately she stopped running to the shelters after a few times. Thats when she got hit, the roof collapsed on top of her but fortunately she was saved when the beam lodged over her bed.
I guess the subways entrances and underground markets would act as natural shelters in seoul. |

One of the Korean teachers at my school pretty much said the exact same thing. I've never seen said flags before. I can't help but speculate that there is something afoot...do air raid sirens usually occur during the working week? Back home when they ran tornado drills they were the first Saturday of the month at 1:00 sharp. Do they test them regularly here? Are they random occurances? Like I said, this was the first time I've ever noticed them.
JongnoGuru, I don't get why there would be a threadlock. Am I missing something here? This is an interesting, important, and timely topic. |

Maybe something to do with there being another thread about this topic I just found?
My apologies but I did not realise there was an existing post. A thread title consisting of "WTF is going on?" is not obviously related to the topic of air raid drills at first glance and personally I don't bother to read every thread with an ambiguous title to find out if there is a clash. "Air raid drills today" is a little more obvious. |

No, the topic is fine. It's just that the poster Jinju started one already that's probably up to page 6 by now. Look for it if you're interested. I thought Caveman Mod might be sweeping by to crack this thread upside the head with his club.
They hold civil defence drills on the 15th or 16th of the month. Not every month, and not in quite a while. |

They had a similar drill at a similar time of the day and week in my parts back in April. Of course back then nothing was spectacularly different on the political front so it didn't hold the same power. |

Ok, I gotcha. Perhaps the mods can make a more concerted effort to ensure that thread titles are not ambiguous and actually related to a topic so as to avoid this kind of confusion. Also, maybe this thread can be merged into the other one under a more appropriate title. "Air Raid Siren Today" is about as specific as you can get. "WTF is going on" can pretty much mean anything. For all we know, he could have been posting about Madonna's adoption troubles. |
