I was just reading this article about a new law that is being proposed in Ontario, in Canada. Vehicles would have to have enough seatbelts for all the occupants. Currently, you can have more people than seatbelts in a car. They made the change after a 7-passenger van got t-boned by a semi-trailer, and the van had 11 passengers inside. The minister in charge sited the damage inflicted by an unbelted person pinballing around a car, even in a low-impact crash.

which leads me to my resolution, and I hope others will consider doing the same here in Korea: How many times have we gotten in a taxi where there is no seatbelt in the backseat, and just continued on to our destination? And this one of the most dangerous traffic areas on the planet. I resolve that if I get in a taxi and the back seat belt is not working or is just not there, I will tell the taxi to stop, and I will get in the front seat. If I am in a group and there are not enough seats, we will get out and get another cab, or take two. Maybe if enough of us do this, taxis will start taking safety seriously and put in some lap belts in the back. And, I also resolve to tell taxis to go the speed limit, whether they like it or not. Sure I may save a chun, but is that really worth risking my life, or someone elses?

I hope some of you will join me. I know this sounds dorky, but just because we are in Korea, doesn't mean we have to make dumb decisions we wouldn't make back home. I think we can actually maybe change something in Korea for the better. Here's hoping.
