China erects North Korea border fence

Ahead of the adoption of a U.N. Security Council resolution against Pyongyang, China increased security along its border with North Korea by building fences in and near Dandong, Liaoning Province, its largest city on the border.
Residents on both sides of the border seemed unable to quell anxiety about the situation, as some North Korean merchants began stockpiling goods. A nearby resident said, "The fences were built a week or so ago, though we don't know why."
Even after Pyongyang's announcement that it conducted a nuclear test, areas along the border appeared calm. But closer to the border, on a drive about 20 kilometers north of central Dandong, showed brand new barbed wire fences. |

I spent Sunday reading 'The Aquariums of Pyongyang'. I hope to god the Chinese fences aren't any more effective than the one the US is building along part of the US/Mexican border. Those poor people up there don't need any more obstacles in their way than they already have.
There is something abhorent in the idea of building a fence to pen in the victims of KJI in order to punish KJI. Maybe it makes sense to someone who has lived under a Marxist regime for 50+ years, but it doesn't to me. |

I read that book too.
Its just like China not to take responsibility for refugees and any humanitarian problems.
On the up side, Now that the border is secured, they will be more likely to put sanctions on N.Korea. |

The United States has a border with Mexico. As a sovereign country, it is free to place a border if it feels untrammeled immigration brings some kind of disorder to the country. Of course, Mexico may not like that, but Mexico failed to promote economic policies that would aid in the redistribution of wealth and build a large enough middle class. That is not the U.S's responsiblity.
As far as China, it, like South Korea, does not want a flood of North Koreans after a coup d'etat. I can understand that. Anyway, does one see the Europeans opening their borders for all the oppressed, impoverished people of the world?
Of course, it would be nice for China to take in North Korean refugees. However, they are trying to play some balancing act with the different forces in North Korea. It seems they are taking some Korean territory through some border agreement they drew up with the North in the past. |
