Yeah, I was also mesmerized when I saw it up close. Pictures just don't do it justice. It was a very spiritual experience for me. |

Of course it's stunning, but I'm going to lay my money on the Terra cotta army in China
Notice the soldier infront of the one with the yellow collar is asleep
then you look and realize they're ALL that distinctive |

Seen the Terra Cotta Warriors, haven't seen the mask first hand. Still, I like the mask more. Could be just because it's more shiny though |

Tut's mask is certainly exquisite. But I can never look at it without wondering just how outraged he would be at lowborn peasants like us ogling at his sacred treasure. |

Speak for yourself. I'd be living in a manor if it wasn't for that pesky French Revolution.

As a work of art it definitely ranks up there. As a symbol of tyranny and exploitation, well. I guess I can't say enough against it.
Everytime I look at a skillful work of human craft and imagination from the ancient world, like Tut's mask, I'm amazed by the transcendence of human creativity. But since I'm not interested in fetishizing material culture, I don't have any counter-examples of other works to present as better.
Tut's mask is cool. |

I'm not denigrating Tut or Nefertiti, but walking into a room with a classical Greek statue is even more breath-taking to me. Hermes at Olympia, Zeus (or Poseidon--no one seems to know which one it is) in Athens...those things are awesome.
My very favorite one is a fragment of a head that sits on the wall in the National Museum in Athens. No idea who is it. Just a head. I swear I saw it breathing. |

Tut's mask is magnificent and incredibly old. It would get my vote too.
But, The Book of Kells, from AD 800, has to be up there as one of the most amazing preserved manuscripts of all time (but I'm Irish so I'm biased!).
