The rate of emigration off the peninsula to countries such as Australia and New Zealand is rapidly increasing. Last year, 24,391 Koreans emigrated to the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others, a 20.7 percent increase over the numbers from 2002.
By region, emigrants to Canada dropped from 6,931 in 2002 to 3,898, a 44 percent decrease, while the number moving to Australia rose 2.5 times from 673 to 1,761.
The U.S. and New Zealand saw 47.2 percent and 68.1 percent increases in their numbers of Korean immigrants, with the number rising from 10,175 in entering the U.S. in 2002 to 17,308 last year, and in New Zealand, from 847 to 1,424. As the number of emigrants increases, the scope of funds being dispersed overseas also increases. |
