Hello all,
My boyfriend came over here on a tourist visa to look for a job but hasnt had much luck (hes from Mexico so hes looking for a Spanish-teaching job). His initial 90-day single entry tourist visa will expire in early December but I was hoping to get an extension so that he could have some extra time to look for a job (or at least stay here through the New Year so we could spend the holidays together).
Im making a visa run in the next week or so. I was thinking of bringing him with me assuming that hed be given a new 90-day tourist visa upon reentry to Korea, but Im not quite sure how immigration handles that and Ive seen some conflicting information on this site: I found one thread where people talked about foreigners living on tourist visas and making Japan runs every three months to renew their visas but was told by others that only 30 days is granted upon reentry or that entry could even be denied if he doesnt have proof of an onward ticket in the 30 day period.
So, the bottom line of this lengthy post: he is from Mexico and has a 90-day, single entry tourist visa--if he goes to Japan, what happens when he reenters Korea?
(And if anyone has a link to a site with info, feel free to pass that along; Ive found frustratingly little on the situation on the immigration site). |

I remember replying to your previous post. I at least was under the
assumption that your BF was a US citizen as you said you were. For a
Mexican national it is a little different.
If he is Mexican and travelling on a Mexican passport he will be allowed 3
months for a tourist visit without a visa. He will get a 3 month stamp on
arrival.
He will be required to have return or onward passage from Korea dated
within that 3 month period. It is the airline who may check to ensure this
requirement. If they check and he does NOT have onward passage he
may be denited boarding. Be prepared to buy a ticket out of Korea if you
need to meet the requirement.
===================================
National MEXICO (MX) /Embarkation JAPAN (JP)
Destination KOREA (REPUBLIC) (KR)
Passport required, or
Certificate of Identity with permission from the Ministry of Justice of Korea (Rep.).
Visa not required for a stay of max. 3 months.
Non-compliance with the entry regulations will result in fines for the airline and deportation of passenger.
In all cases:
1. visitor must hold:
- return/onward ticket (if not advised otherwise) and all documents required for next destination; and
- sufficient funds for maintenance; and
- contact address in Korea Rep.

Thanks tomppatz! Very helpful info. He does have a plane ticket home, but it's not until March (he can move the date earlier for a small fee if neccessary). He came in on the 90-day stamp and luckily, the airline didn't give him any problems (I guess he hit it them on a good day ).
A couple of extra questions:
Do you have any idea if it's different when re-entering Korea by ferry (if they're more/less strict on the matter)?
If he shows his plane ticket for March and says that he'll be traveling around Asia in the meantime, using Korea as his arrival/departure point? (that was his original fallback excuse if immigration gave him any trouble the first time around; luckily he didn't have to use it).
Or, if all else fails and he has to purchase an onward ticket, would buying another ferry ticket right there be sufficient? And would it be possible to refund it later?
Thanks again, tom (or anyone else who might be able to shed a little light on this). |
