Pick your favorite hospital and ask to have pulmonary function testing done. The cardio-pulmonary unit in any larger hospital can do it for you.

It will confirm both the asthma (a condition and not a disease in and of itself) and the degree of the inflammation in the lungs and the loss of pulmonary function.

What should worry you more is the reason for the asthma because it is a symptom and not a disease. What is the cause?

It is sometimes caused by a general lack of pulmonary function due to a sedate lifestyle.

It is USUALLY caused by an allergic reaction to something in your environment. The allergen causes inflammation of the tissue in the lungs and this impedes airflow. This is characterized by the "wheeze" that is common in asthmatics. If your asthma is severe or chronic it may be in your best interest to have allergy testing done at some point in the future.

The sysptoms of asthma can be alleviated with the use of bronchodilators such as "Ventolin" (albuterol sulfate HFA inhalation aerosol).

The swelling, if it is persistent can be controlled with the use of many medications, some of which are corticosteroids and some of which are not.

There is lots of information available out there for asthmatics. Do a quick google.

i'm not sure about my local hospital. i'm in the boonies and i don't want word to get around that i don't trust my doctor's opinion.

edit: and, of course, open on saturdays since i'm so far away.
