I just got a job offer from SK and I made many amendments to the contract, most all of which were met, but I had one question about health insurance. Are employers required to provide the Korean National Heath Insurance Plan, or just any health insurance? My employers are offering the following:
6. Insurance/Pension
A. Insurance: A medical and accident insurance plan from an insurance company through the Korean government will be offered to the Employee. Employer agrees to pay 50% of the monthly premium. Employee is responsible for the other 50%, each paying one payment of
100, 000 won to AIG Insurance.
Does anyone else have AIG? Should I accept this as written, or do I demand KNHIP? Or is it normal for schools to offer many different types of health insurance?

I'm pretty sure that you have to be enrolled in the national plan. It used to be they had to provide insurance, but it didn't matter from where. Now, I think it has to be the natioanl one. Can someone back me up on that? |

As of Jan. 1, 2006 the national medical insurance became manditory for all foreign residents in Korea. Prior to that time it was optional.

From 1, 2006, the National Health Insurance will be compulsory for all foreign workers in Korea
☞ Because of the amendment of the National Health Insurance Act on Jul. 13, 2005, without relation to the type of Status of Stay, all foreign workers and overseas Koreans who work for an workplace in Korea shall automatically be the employee insured since 1 January, 2006.
If foreign workers made or will make their employment contract with their employer before 1 January, 2006, they will be the employee insured from 1 January, 2006, and if they will make the employment contract with their employer since 2 January, 2006, they will be the employee insured since the first date of employment.

Even if you have other medical coverage you still LEGALLY have to pay into the NHIC plan. Avoiding it may appear in your favor but if you get caught you will have to backpay the premiums from the date you entered Korea (even if you had no coverage).
Many hakwons will let this go because if they don't register you for medical they can usually avoid pension as well (saving them 4.5% of your salary as their contribution). You lose out on the million won in pension benefits that they would have otherwise contributed.

So you would be paying 100,000 won a month for healthcare cover?
I'd want to know exactly what they were offering if I was going to be paying that much per month.
