I have scoured the forums and Google for any dirt on the Ansan SLP location in particular and came up with nada.

I know that many people have called SLP "Slave Labor Program" but I think it's all dependent upon the individual school.

Has anyone taught at Ansan SLP? Or know anything about that place?

I doubt that I'd actually get a GOOD review if I asked to speak with a teacher from the school. I mean, seriously, would the director ask a disgruntled employee to vouch for the school?

Anyway, the director seemed an okay guy, but any info from you all will be appreciated.

I have had experience with several SLPs. Their bad reputation as a chain is well deserved.

Company contract. They will NOT negotiate.
80 x 80 minute classes per month. (6400 classroom minutes + prep time). You will be in the school for more than 40 hours per week.
Holidays are NOT blocked but are scheduled one at a time and NOT always to make a long weekend. Travel is NOT possible. (ask about the "holiday schedule")
It is company policy for franchises to NOT pay into national pension or medical (regardless of what the contract says).
They do NOT pay overtime. With monthly holidays and red days you will NOT be able to exceed 120 hours per month (they find creative ways to reduce your "classroom time". You do NOT get credit for days that are not worked (like national holidays).

Don't sign with them

Hmm, the contract they sent me did not sound too bad relative to what ttompatz wrote...I just posted my contract on the "contract sticky" so if anyone can take a look and see if it sounds good, I'd appreciate it.

I think Grotto already did, but feel free to sign with them if you want.

Don't take my word for it that it is bad. Spend a year there and make up your own mind.

I work for Ansan SLP. If you have concerns about the school, you should ask for references, both of teachers who have left the school and those currently employed.

Feel free to ask the school itself for clarification about the contract. A lot of the yahoos on this board let their own bad experiences taint their contract views...with the assumption that the school is some kind of eavil entity out to screw teachers over. Our contract is much more favorable to the employee than many other SLPs.

If you haven't heard anything bad, perhaps that means that the school is good. There are lots of good schools out there, including chain schools.

I work for an SLP franchise hakwon, and it is the best hakwon that I have worked at so far in Korea. I was the very first foreign teacher to work here (I started work 3 weeks before the hakwon opened).

Again, it depends upon the hakwon. I am at work from 1~1.30pm until 7.30pm each weekday, making it about 30~33 hours per week.

I call bollocks on that. The SLP calender that I have for this year has 1 break of 9 and 1 break of 6 days each (including weekends) and 1 break of 10 days (Christmas and New Year, again including weekends). Previously, the longest break I had ever had working in Korea was 6 days, including weekends.

All the foreign teachers at my hakwon ARE paying into pension and medical insurance.

Never worked more than the maximum so far, so I can't comment.

Make up your own mind about the hakwon. I don't know it, so I can't comment. Some hakwons are good and others are bad. While many SLPs deservedly have a bad reputation, there is at least one good one out there (comparitively). Decide what work conditions you want from a hakwon and don't settle for anything less. Talk to everyone you can at the hakwon, visit them if you can and check everything out thoroughly.

The contract they offered has been posted and reviewed (and not by me). It is 6400 contact minutes (80 classes of 80 minutes) per month and it is *beep*.

Personally, after looking at that shite contract, AND after my personal bad experiences with MORE THAN 1 SLP franchise, I wouldn't touch it.

Like I said in my last post. DON"T take my word for it.,

Go ahead and sign. Spend a year there and then make up your own mind if it is good or not.

Directors know how to play the game, and they do it well over the phone. He seems like a nice guy Rolling Eyes They have to pull in a foreigner to make parents happy somehow. Sign this **** contract at your own risk!

I wouldn't sign his labor contract simply because...

No established working hours
No recess period (break)
80 minute classes are grotesque
Curriculum design.... Tackle their lack of organization with blindness Rolling Eyes
Long overtime hour: 80 minutes
Low overtime pay
2 hours prep time inclusive of pay
Forced hours of overtime work!
Late date of pay: 14th!
Vague medical insurance clause
Vague income tax clause

Housing deposit
Paid Sick days: should have a minimal of 3

No E-2 Visa Run clause stating your employer pays for....
Employer: 60 day termination notice
Airfare reimbursement should be waived after 6 months!
Recieve your deposit one month after contract completion Rolling Eyes

I'm currently working at my 2nd SLP franchise ( I completed a one year contract back in March 2006 with no problems and recieved Severance) I've never had a problem with any of the problems mentioned above. My school payed the pension,health and overtime (when I worked it) with no fuss and I never worked overlylong hours. I was treated with respect.. I worked for an ECC first time around (company owned one) and never will go back to them in my life time. Mostly because of lack of respect and the vacation time) They were worse than SLP. For me I was in Seoul both times so I went to the school and checked it out and talked to the teachers outside and inside the school and was satisfied with my choices.

As mentioned by someone else the vacation time this year is quite generous for a hakwon.. 9 days in the Summer, X-mas, and 6 at Chuseok.. Best bet, if you're in Seoul go to teh school and see for yourself. that's the best way to go about it..

Well, there might be some good SLP's...but with the majority of them being so bad...it's just not worth the risk. All too often you end up finding out that you signed with a bad school after the fact, not before. Don't bother. Their teaching materials and books are utter crap, if all the other stuff doesn't scare you away THAT should.
