|

SEOUL (AFP) - The United States is more responsible than North Korea itself for Pyongyang's nuclear test, according to a South Korean poll published.
Forty-three percent of respondents picked the United States as most to blame, followed by 37.3 percent who chose the country which actually conducted the October 9 test.
Nearly 14 percent said South Korea was most responsible, 2.4 percent picked China and one percent singled out Japan.
The telephone poll reported by the Korea Times was conducted among 500 adults by a local research firm from October 11-12.

| What's up with Korean polls being so limited? 500 people? Is it really that hard to make a few more 2-minute calls? |

Planet south Korea is outdone only by North korea, for its sheer one-sided ignorance of reality. A village calling itself a nation.
I mean how ridiculous is North korea's latest statement, delivered when its delegation stormed out after they got sanctions.
"People of the world, do not measure our strong national power only by our possession of a satellite. Chosun (Korea) is the only country with the unity of a determined mind, which cannot be affected by a nuclear weapon or missile."

If America would have just kept giving North Korea what they asked for then they wouldn't have needed to go nuclear.
Kim Jong-Il just asks for the basics for his people to survive. It's not his fault that his country was split in such a way that the lusher pastures were given to the South. And the Yanks were largely responsible for the split in the first place.
So yes, it is America's fault.

well, when they made that deal in 1994 to give up the nuke program in exchange for light water reactors, it certainly was america that didn't come through on their promise even after north korea had stopped their program.
then when albright and kim jong-il made that deal in 2000 for north korea to scrap their entire nuke program and also even give up their missle arsenal (of missles with +300 miles range), it was our current commander in chief who got on tv and made the "axis of evil" speech in conjunction with scraping the entire deal unilaterally.
and when they finally made that deal through the six-party talks in 2005, and even before the ink could dry, it coincidentally was discovered that north korea was counterfeiting dollars and smuggling drugs (both of which required sanctions amounting to closing off north korea's banking overseas); i.e. puting a big stick in someone's economic arse...
so everytime the situation is about to be diffused, in comes the hawkish elements of our government to do their abracadabra trick...
so yea, it may seem like to some koreans (atleast the educated ones that have a memory longer than cnn's), that america is responsible for the current crises.
if you see it differently please elaborate. |

Hmmm...I seem to remember KJI not abiding by every agreed upon point.

I see. Only KJI is allowed to make "we will destroy you" style speeches. True, we are supposed to be civilized, and the Koreans, are, well...

True, we should just allow the NORKS to kill three birds with one stone:
1) Build nukes on drug and fake money
2) Allow the drugs to freely flow and destroy lives
3) Allow their fake "Super Dollar" to be made freely and to destabilize the world economy
...all just so we don't upset KJI. LOL.

which is?

and exactly why I will refer to this thread each time someone tries to tell me Koreans are sane, civilized, have a clue, cultured, nice, smart.

Now you're getting it. We give Kim everything he wants and he lets us live. You got a problem with that? South Koreans don't seem to. |

South Koreans (or anyone) blaming the US for North Korea developing nuclear weapons remind me of Alec Baldwin in Team America:
"Who's to blame for the attacks on Panama? The terrorists who carried out the attack? Whoever supplied them with the explosives? No. Blame Team America" |

I despise NK and I would love to see that regime go out like Causescu. However realistically, there isnt one side to blame for all of it. In order of blame for me, its like this
1. North Korea. Ofcourse they are to blame most. They were directly behind their own actions. They built the damn thing, they tested it.
2. US. The US HAS to shoulder part of the blame. Their schozoid policies were a real big factor here. From the start they should have decided: talk or regime change? Choose a course of action and follow it through. Regime change? Then do it. Talk? Then TALK. Have sticks like sanctions but also have carrots. Set up channels of communication. Not talking with NK was an IDIOTIC move. They wasted 2 years ignoring them, hoping the problem would go away. They should have engaged. And even if you opt for regime change, dont ignore the problem, engage with your rnrmy, talk to them. Bush fucked this one up big time. He didnt have the sticks that Clinton had (coming close to attacking and letting the Norks KNOW IT) nor the carrots nor the communication. It was that combination of hawkish policies of Clinton who was going to attack and setting up back channel communication to let KIS back down by rwaching a deal that Bush should have employed. Bush fucked up.
3. China. China simply isnt tough enough. They have the most leverage in all of this and really they arent doing a thing. Shutting down the oil and saying "no oil till you come to the table and stop your program" would NOT lead to NK's collapse because they WOULD come to the table before they collapsed.
4. SK. Almost as bad as China. I put them 4th because they simply have less leverage than China. |
