I'm interested in "junk reading", extensive reading, and sustained silent reading approaches to ESL and EFL. I'm actually in the process of creating a lengthy literature guide/list for my students, and it's likely my school will purchase the books for the library in the future (I realize that literature might not interest all students as possible "junk reading"). I want to research the area so that I can implement an effective program and also create a research paper for presentation to my principal.
So far I'm aware of Krashen, I think Mark Helgeson did something at the Busan KOTESOL conference a year or two ago, and that Cho Kyung-Sook at Busan Kyo-Dae has done some research into applications for Korea.
Also I found this book: The SSR Handbook: How to Organize and Manage a Sustained Silent Reading Program by Janice L. Pilgreen, and I think I'll buy it.
Does anyone have any information they would like to share, or more conveniently for you, any recommended book titles? |

I know there is an extensive reading yahoo group. I used to follow it when I was looking into how to teach second language learners to read and write. It was quite helpful at the time, but I haven't kept up with the group lately.
I have some books around the house. I will have a look and see if anything deals specifically with those approaches. There may be a chapter or two...
Hope this helps.... |

Great. I found the Yahoo Group.
It also has a link to the webpage http://www.extensivereading.net/, and that site has a pretty good bibliography. |
