Bush signs bill on terror suspects
By Sheryl Gay Stolberg The New York Times

Published: October 17, 2006

WASHINGTON President George W. Bush signed legislation Tuesday that creates new rules for prosecuting and interrogating terror suspects, a move Bush said would enable the Central Intelligence Agency to resume a once- secret program to question the most dangerous enemy operatives in the fight against terrorism.

"Congress had no justification for suspending the writ of habeas corpus - a core value in American law - in order to avoid judicial review that prevents government abuse," said one leading critic, Senator Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who is his party's senior member on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He called it "a sad day when the rubber-stamp Congress undercuts our freedoms."

I find this, just the cherry on Bush's poisoned cake. And that he enacted it in the memory of the 9/11 victims is just sickening.

Notably absent at the "coronation" was McCain. Good for him. More and more respecting the man. Cheney and Rumsfeld sure as hell were there....

I think it is write to label Bush's idea of justice as "guily until found guilty."

And that hardly ANY members stood up and shouted out for America , is the truest snapshot at how America has changed and isn't on the right track. Also that 53% say they have no problem with torture and secret prisons....wow......

This said, I know there are a lot of Americans who will fight this erosion of "core" values, fight for an America of laws and not that of celebrities and entitlement.
