I think possibly they are trying to prove they have the real deal, if they are going to sell the tech they have to show the world they can do some big booms.
Also I think it is a big middle finger to W. and the UN. |

If they do China will stop their food supply.
We're seeing the beginning of the end for NK I think. |

The first test presented a danger to the world, but I didn't feel any sense of personal threat.
I'm not so sure I would be so calm about a second test. I just heard about the possibility and haven't had time to figure out why it seems more of a threat to me personally. I don't know whether KJI is nuts or not, but even if he is the poster child of rationality, he can miscalculate the degree of tolerance of the US, China and Japan.
Maybe what is nagging at me is that China made clear that Korea north of the 38 Parallel was their concern and that the US/UN must stay out. They proved they meant it.
I think they also are highly upset over the first test. A second test might be enough for them to decide that toppling the regime is less dangerous than allowing it to remain in power. In the event China crossed the border, would S Korea race them to Pyongyang? Would Roh Moo-Hyun swallow his pride and ask for US support? Would Bush give it if asked?
Anyway, worrisome. |
