As far as I know SOFA personnel are waiting for free access and can not obtain NEW decoders until the Department of the Army agrees to provide the funding.
We are supposedly moving towards the US military in Japan model (which by the way, comforms to military regulation) where ALL military broadcast is confined to cable on the military base, and broadcast over air is only available via a decoder. AFN is not supposed to be available to the Korean public according to US army regulation. |

Yeah I posted about this a while ago. Korean cable companies literally steal the AFN signal and put it on their cable systems. Thats why there is no NFL on AFN Korea, the NFL negoit rights with SBS and MBC/ESPN and AFN showing games undermines the value of those rights
Thing is as long as the threat from the north remains here and USFK personnel live off post they will continue to broadcast AFN over the air so personnel can get command info in case something happens |

Youre missing the point!
If you go, for example, to the US Air Force Base in Mildenhall, England you can see all the AFN channels on base. Every channel is downloaded via satellite and sent to everyone on base.
If you walk one foot off base you cant get it! You cant see it! Its not allowed! That is a US DOD regulation. We can not broadcast our military TV signal out to the public.
The Koreans are not stealing the signal! AFN is not supposed to make it available. The signal is supposed to be cabled (CCTV) on the bases or sent by satellite to decoders off base. They should not be sending the signal out to the public via an antenna at Namsan. There should be no way to pick up AFN with a VHF antenna - but you still can.
In the old days the signal was sent out since there was nothing else in Korea and AFKN was the first television station in Korea, but that exception to regulation should have gone away 20 years ago.
The fact that some tourist can see our AFN Korea signal while staying at the Westin Chosun is just so beyond logic I cant believe its happening.
can you imagine that crap available in London hotels? |

No I'm not, I got this straight from the LTC who runs AFN Korea.
The reason AFN-K is still broadcast over the air here is the military threat posed by the north and the fact that so many GIs live off post. I case of an emergency AFN-K would be THE source of info for military personal living off post, thats why its broadcast over the air near many bases. You cant get it over the air in Daejeon because there are no bases near there likewise Gwangju (yes there is a small USAF base at the airport but those people dont off post I know that because I lived near there for 2 years and have been on post there)
For years Korean cable companies have been pirating the signal here, there just isnt a fessable way to get reliable info to people living off post. Apparently what Col told me was Hollywood has been very upset with AFN because they sell the rights to many shows here only to have them undercut because of AFN
As soon as their is a cost efficent way to get command info in case of an emergency to USFK personnel off post AFN-K will dissappear or Hollywood will not be giving AFN the rights to broadcast shows for free in Korea |

Are soldiers required to have televisions and radios and to always have them on?
And its not silly actually, its what you imagine.
You imagine Command Information and PSAs released into the Korean airwaves justified as someone might have their TV on when war begins.
Someone stationed at Yongsan is going to turn on his TV and figure out what to do instead of contacting his chain of command.
Do you realize that people visit Korea and see this programming? |

I'm just telling you what the commander of AFN-K was telling me and the reasoning behind how AFN-K works.
Also if you go to the US Embassy in Seouls webpage (www.asktheconsel.org or something like that) and look at the evac plans it tells US citizens to listen and watch AFN-K if there is an emergency and us mi-gooks are getting out for info.
you can believe what you want |
