Why do so many posters have this pic attached to their signature?

I figured it was somthing that got started in the current events forum, and since I don't browse that forum, I'm not in on the joke. So what's it about?

Do NOT tell her! She'll get it eventually and she'll want it that way.

In case you haven't noticed, atheism has become more fashionable than ever on these forums. All those communist dudes pictured were big atheists, and some of them harshly persecuted and/or killed those who professed belief in a personal God. (So far, the anti-God posters here usually just employ insults and occasional threats via PM to stop posting anything that suggests that there's a God...)

Especially in this rather dangerous time to be living on the Korean peninsula, people should try to find the deeper meaning of our existence in this world...

OK, I'll sincerepost this one.

I first used the communist party picture as my signature/avatar. I cut it out of some desktop wallpaper I found on another site:

Initially, I had a line of text underneath saying 'join the party, comrade'. Communist party, geddit? Then I got bored with it and changed the line to put this pic in your sig if u r down with communism ok. Some (usually teenaged) internet users do similar things on britney spears forums or wherever. Then some people who are apparently 'down with communism' put the pic in their sig. There you go.

There. The joke is no longer funny. I hope you're satisfied.

p.s. periwinkle, you should read the atheism thread!

Actually, I have sort of a checkered commie background. My grandfather (from Armenia...) used to regularly attend party meetings while a factory worker in Massachusetts. And, I vaguely recall joining fellow imprisoned anti-Viet Nam war demonstrators in Miami Beach in a rousing version of the "Internationale" circa 1972. (They tried to get us to leave the jail, but we refused to go until our over-hyped "revolutionary leaders" were released first...) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Internationale
