Has anyone ever had to teach a drama class for the younger grades? Any suggestions on what's worked and what hasn't?

What sort of parameters are you dealing with. How big is your room? What is in the room? Tables? Chairs? Mats? How many kids? What are the objectives set out by the school for this class? Are you restricted to using scripts? Do you want improv activities to get the kids up, moving and motivated?

2 different classes. One is with grades one and two students who are at a low level, 6 girls and 1 boy. The second class is grades 5 and 6 and they are at a fairly high level for their age, maybe 9 students in that class.

The classroom is huge with the usual class room stuff: board, markers, chairs and tables. No mats.

The only objectives the school has given me are to get the kids speaking and having fun. Any improv activities that work are great but I haven't been given many specifics.

Right off the top of my head, your biggest obstacle is going to be getting them to memorize their lines. That could eat up a lot of class time. I'd reccomend bringing a tape recorder or some sort of digital video recorder so that the kids can practice and then hear themselves speak. It can help with pronunciation.
