Our new self-appointed Secretary of State has gone and done it. Not only did she lie about what the Israeli PM said, she has apparently broken a federal law by posing herself as a director of diplomacy which, by the way, is the sole job of the Administration, NOT Congress.

Quote:
The Logan Act, codified at 18 U.S.C. 953, states:
Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without
authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

She had no authority to go to Syria for any sort of diplomacy, let alone cuddle up to Assad and claim that he is somehow a serious player. Hell, even the ultra-liberal UN wants this clown put on trial. This shadow presidency that Pelosi has created is only to politcally injure the President and, whether she intends it or not, it harms the United States.

An excellent take on Pelosi's little embassy.

Wow, keen insight there. The law should only apply to the eeevil Bushie and U.S. soldiers, right? The fact that Pelosi is pandering for the Secretary of State job because she believes Hilly will be president is "irrelevant" to you, right?

I don't believe I've ever criticized Bush for actually engaging in talks...

Well, I don't think George W. Bush's administration is doing a better job. The administration had 7 years to do a good job when it came to foreign policy. The people spoke recently. They aren't happy. Anyway, there is nothing in the law or constitution against a member of Congress who serves her constituency and is a separate branch from visiting a foreign state. The Executive Branch is not the only branch that deals with foreign policy. I suppose based on what you quoted, you could charge Jimmy Carter. You could also charge the Republicans who went to Syria. You also said without the authority of the United States. Mrs. Pelosi is the leader of the U.S. House. She is the United States in a way. If Bush has the right, so does she. You can't say a member of Congress has no right to visit Syria. That is ridiculous.
Why does she need Bush's authority? The same U.N. that you mentioned Bush ignored more than Assad, if you actually think about it.

I personally do not like the Syrian government. I would like those who assasinated Rafiq Al Hariri put behind bars. I am for invoking Chapter 7 to get the tribunal under way, but what you wrote is hysterical.

You mentioned the authority of the United States? The people of the United States had an election recently, and I suppose you forgot that.
She clearly is representing the United States. Meanwhile, Bush's popularity has gone to about 30%. I don't see the American people objecting to Pelosi's visit. As Lincoln said "Government for the people and by the people". Pelosi has political authority to do what she did.

I should add something. I found no outrage in the Israeli press or disapproval of Pelosi's visit. Some people are making something out of nothing. She didn't lie. She simply reiterated Israel's position regarding Syria's statements of wanting peace. Israel basically said indirectly, "If you are serious, prove it, we are skeptical".

If you want to charge the speaker with a felony, because you are claiming she doesn't have the authority of the United States, I will remind you that she is the leader of the house and a democrat is also majority leader. Both branches deal with foreign policy. We aren't talking about a Supreme Court judge going there.

It's funny when Gingrich and Hastert did similar trips I didn't hear the Fox News crowd calling for them to be charged with anything. I guess there is such a thing as bias.

Quote:
Back then, the media treated Gingrich like he was the American Prime Minister, and his right-wing supporters had no problem with the House Speaker travelling and expressing his own foreign policy views which deviated from the Clinton administration's. Quite the contrary, many right-wing leaders -- including Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed, and Vin Weber -- went on PBS and praised Gingrich's "aggressive role in China."

They couldn't have been more pleased that Gingrich did what, in their minds, the Clinton administration was failing to do -- standing up to the Chinese. Gingrich, as House Speaker, was heroic for going on his own and doing that. The same behavior from Pelosi (which I'm sure is, in actuality, completely different for all sorts of unknown and indiscernible reasons) is now both a grave political mistake and a reckless breach of protocol.
