I'll start:

Andy, You're a Star (The Killers) and Venus In Furs (The Velvet Underground)

Heart In a Cage (The Strokes) and The Passenger (Iggy Pop)

Dani California (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Mary Jane's Last Dance (Tom Petty)

...and of course:

Getcha (Lee Hyori) and Toxic (Britney Spears)

To me a lot of bands sound similar, usually ones I don't like much.

Examples:

Backstreet Boys and Nsync.

Aerosmith and Guns n Roses.

Metallica and about 500 other heavy metal bands.

Most rappers and hip hop "artists"

A lot of country music... Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, whoever... damned if I know the difference or even care to.

That's often the way. In a genre you like you can hear infinite amounts of sublte distinctions between this and that. In a genre you don't like it "all sounds the same"...

I thnk the drum solo Chad Sexton from 311 was (still is?) known for is a direct ripoff of Carl Palmer from Emerson Lake & Palmer. The way it starts, with the BUH ch BUH ch buhbuhbuhbuhbuh .. remarkably similar.

Anything by Arcade Fire and Echo and the Bunnymen. Am I the only person old enough to remember Echo and the Bunnymen?
