Would anyone be able to give me some feedback on ILS? I've been running searches here in the forum for "ILS" but I get too many results (at least partially because the word "Ilsan" also has an "Ils" in it). I have a similar problem when attempting a Google search (too many "ILS"s in the world).
I was provided with a link to their website, but it appears to only be in Korean: http://www.ilsk.co.kr/fran/17/main/
I'd really appreciate any help with this. I've done one interview so far - which went well - but I really need to get some information that doesn't come from the school itself. I'm trying to determine what kind of an environment the school would actually be to work in. Thanks in advance. |

It is your typical kindy / elementary hakwon with a few middle school classes thrown in to make your day longer.
Usual caveats apply.
Check, check, check with MORE than ONE of the current staff about conditions at that particular branch. Get their e-mail so you can contact them without the boss looking over their shoulder. The usual items of contention are things like overtime, medical, pension and holidays.
ASK SPECIFICALLY - and get good answers about:
+PAY, overtime (do they pay it or avoid it with creative book keeping).
+CLASSES - how many per day / week / month. How long is a class and +WHAT IS A CLASS HOUR. A contract that says 120 hours can have you doing up to 180 x 40 minute classes (7200 contact minutes) per month for the same money as someone doing 120 x 50 minute classes (6000 contact minutes per month).
+Do they really pay into the pension and national medical?
+Do they do taxes properly or just flat rate you at 3.3 or 5% (illegal but often done - money is usually not remitted to the tax man)
+What is the housing like and what do they pay for? Your free apartment can cost you up to 150k or more won per month in maintainence and other fees (not really free).
+Holidays - when, how, how many and who decides.
+Will they PREPAY a 1 year open airticket ticket? Don't settle for less. |

ILS in Jeongja is one of the best schools I have walked into as far as:
management
lay out of the school
location
salary negotiation
current foreign staff
general working conditions
You can make more money in Korea elsewhere, but for professionalism and general security of promised working conditions, you could not go wrong.
Yeah they are a client of mine, and no they have nothing coming up as far as employment opportunities, but out of all the crap I see in schools, this place has none of it and any newbie or veteran would be hard pressed to not be happy for a year or two here.
Have no idea about the other ILS schools only the one in Jeongja.
As about 80% of schools in Korea get it wrong, it is nice when one of them try to get it right.
Current teachers at the school do say the level of the students English is poor and management agree to this. This is why this year, (2006) they have tried to erradicate past problems with curriculum and staffing to improve the place.
The refreshing thing was that the first problem they addressed was to get new staff in and really look after them. Happy teacher - happy school- students learn more. Nice huh?
Let's hope it continues. |
