Meh.
He hasn't had the freedom to do anything bad yet.
My guess now is that if Bob Rae wins the Liberal leadership than the Conservatives are in trouble.
If Michael Ignatieff wins it'll be 8 years of Conservative majorities. |

Well, the childcare plan, taking women's rights off of the list of things to take care of, even bringing up the gay-marriage debate, many thing relating to the war on terrorism, and others I can't think of now. That's with a minority government. Imagine if the jerk ever got a majority !!! |

I like him, and his style very much. Also, I prefer him to the smug douchbags that the liberals keep running. I'd prefer a dog be PM before Layton. But I dislike many of his policy ideas. Pot should not be criminalized. Canucks not in Afganiland (though that was Martins idea) and gay unions are cool with me.
I really liked that he ditched that court program (can't remember the name) and got a softwood deal. That may have saved Nafta.

I agree. Sometimes I hear him and think, "well he's not as bad as I'd feared.." and generally agree with what he says. Then I remember, he's auditioning. This is a job interview. What we're seeing may be very different if he had a majority. |

Harper has drawn criticism for removing certain environmental and women's rights programs, but the truth is that the programs he cut were largely ineffective and he was just trying to trim the waste - not eliminate the cause they were supposed to deal with.
He seems to be a pragmatist and knows that bringing up the gay marriage debate will end up costing him votes, so I think he's been trying to ignore it as best he can.
But I definitely agree with you about what would happen if he had a majority! The worst thing Canada could do right now would be to raise the debt with excessive and unnecessary corporate tax breaks. |

Uhhhh, offering tax breaks at a time of surplus wouldn't raise the debt.
Spending more than you collect will raise the debt. But Harper has a PhD in economics, and I trust him on the economy, if nothing else.
Taxes are very, very high in Canada. They ought to be lowered. |

It could take us from surplus to debt. But yeah individual income taxes are WAY too high right now and could use a big fat cut. I was referring to corporate tax cuts which can be very significant with (sometimes) little benefit to the overall economy. |

I don't want to pick on you for one issue, so I'll say my part and then agree to disagree with you. Eh?
It depends on the kind of tax cut and how big it is. Tax cuts can actually increase revenue for the state as productive activity increases. The way that Bush does cuts isn't the only way.
I think you will find that most mainstream economists would agree with the statement "corporate taxes in Canada are too high".
Thats it. Now back to how gays should marry and pot be smoked in public. |

As a non-taxpayer, for now, I'm quite happy they're so high. (It's not ME paying! heh heh...)
I'm especially pleased the surplus is what it is, so Canada can reduce the mountain debt that got racked up under the governments of our youth. Paying that down is an investment in Canada's future.
On a totally unrelated rant, I'd like to see them hide the GST and sales taxes back into the price of things, rather than add them on after. When I'm home I hate having to do math in the checkout line to add 15 percent or whatever it is to my prices. When I buy a Diet Coke for a dollar, I have to get about $1.30 ready to cover taxes and deposit.
If I have a large number of things, I end up not having a clue what the price will be, and just hand over a credit card. I accept in ignorance whatever total they concoct.
Living in Asia has spoiled me, where the price is the price. |

That was a respectuful, well thought through response. You made a fair point, sticking to the issues and avoiding personal attacks. If people would debate issues on the CE forum like you just did, this forum could be so much better.
(sorry I just haven't seen that for a while around here)
Edit: I was referring to BJWD specifically but this thread is still great

| It's been 6 years since I've lived in Canada. I'm still trying to figure out where Presto Manning went. |

If Rae wins Canada is in trouble. Smart guy and everything but he'll make a new record on national deficit and debt.
And that is the extent of my political dabblings. |
