Does anyone have a link where it says NHIC is now mandatory for foreigners? Either in English or Korean, I need to show it to my boss.

She told me that the health coverage was optional and if I wanted to opt in it would cost 70,000 a month. So I opted out.

http://www.nhic.or.kr/wbe/faq/faq.html

Go to: When is the effective date of coverage for the employee insured?

The enrollment is effective on the employee's first date at work. For the employees who hadn't been covered by the NHI program, their coverage has been compulsory (mandatory) since the first of January in 2006.

Your employer is required to deduct 2.24% from your monthly salary.

1,800,000 Korean Won = 40,320 KRW
1,900,000 Korean Won = 42,560 KRW
2,000,000 Korean Won = 44,800 KRW
2,100,000 Korean Won = 47,040 KRW
2,200,000 Korean Won = 49,280 KRW
2,300,000 Korean Won = 51,520 KRW

If she deducts 70,000 Korean per month from your monthly salary, then she's full of Rolling Eyes !

From 1, 2006, the National Health Insurance will be compulsory for all foreign workers in Korea

☞ Because of the amendment of the National Health Insurance Act on Jul. 13, 2005, without relation to the type of Status of Stay, all foreign workers and overseas Koreans who work for an workplace in Korea shall automatically be the employee insured since 1 January, 2006.
