Hi there,
We have been searching the internet for days now looking for cheap accomodation in Japan. We are a couple. We are doing an 8 day tour, so we are just looking for somewhere to crash in Fukuoka, Kyoto, Kushiro area and Tokyo. We are looking for something preferably under $30 each or $60 for a double, if this is even possible (we are beginning to think it isnt!). Like I said, we just want a place to crash, and we are even considering sleeping at internet cafes at the moment! Any advice on some cheap accomodation would be GREAT! Thanx! |

I stayed here:

in Tokyo. It's not great, and the location isn't ideal, but it was the only place I could find for less than five or six thousand yen a night. I think it was 2700 for a small room, and probably a bit more for a room for a couple. |

you're best bet would be to look for guesthouses rather than hostels; Japan has a tourism site dedicated to setting up travelers with guesthouses; I recommend Goju Guesthouse in Kyoto (my gf and I paid $35/night there during Chusok, and Hotel Kinki in Osaka was $30/night; Goju was extremely friendly and able to help us out a good bit with sites to see/places to go |

http://www.hotel-newsimple.jp/index.html - only in Japanese but you can figure out things on there pretty easily.
Walking distance from Hakata and Gion stations in a quiet neighbourhood.
To book, email <info AT hotel-newsimple DOT jp>
with your details, dates and what type of room you want.
If you get a private room, you get basic Japanese breakfast for free.
oops.. forgot to say that it's in FUKUOKA.

I made reservervations online for hostels in Kyoto, Nara & Osaka through http://www.hostelworld.com/ . This is a good site and all the information available in english!
I would also recomend Gojo guest house ( http://www.gojo-guest-house.com/ ) in Kyoto as mentioned by mortin21. The staff was friendly and gave lot of useful information. Many places of attraction are also nearby the Gojo. They also rent bicycles (actually a good way to explore kyoto) to go around. |
