For those of you who drive in Korea, I was wondering if you use/purchased a car navigation system.

I have a few questions:

1)Do you find them helpful?
2)What are disadvantages/problems with using them?
3)If you purchased, where did you get it? Price?

I tried to get one a few months back. It was a type of navigation/photo-radar one. Before I bought it, I had to register it to my car. The salesperson directed me to the easy to use register program online. But, of course it did not accept my Alien Registration Number. So I aborted that plan. Also, I have a stubborn rule of never putting anything I sign up for under a Korean name.

4)So how did you register it in your name?

-Thanks

I don't know anything about buying one in Korea (or anywhere else), but I did notice this article in the paper:

Quote:
German driver's car directs him into toilet
23 October 2006

BERLIN: A German motorist followed the command "Turn right now" from his navigation system and crashed into a small toilet hut by the side of the road - about 30 metres before the crossing he was meant to take.

Do you mean a Korean's name, or your name in Korean?

I want it in my name.
BTW I am Canadian.

I just don't want to rely on a Korean to use their name.

I bought a PMP (i-Station V43) with a built-in GPS. 7 months ago. It works great. You don't have to sign for anything. Just take it home and download the latest navigation maps from the i-Station website. Then you're good to go.

Plus, you have all the portability advantages. Finish driving, take it out of its cradle, and listen to music or watch videos later.

It does the speed camera warning thing too.

Having a GPS has made driving in Korea a whole lot easier for me. I don't know what I did before.

It was 600,000 for the 30GB Navi version. I think it should be much cheaper now. These things drop in price fast as the new models rapidly come out.

Wow! I just looked them up on Danawa. 416,000!! For the V43 Navi 30 GB. Almost 200,000 less than 7 months ago........

That's what we have too and it works like a charm. My husband takes care of all the particulars (and all of the driving at this point too), so it doesn't bother me that it's all Korean -- but have you found a way to switch it to English, or are you fine with using it in Korean? I like to think my Korean is quite good, but I still think that when I start driving, I'm going to wish there was an English option.

You can't switch the GPS to English. But, it is switchable to English for all its other functions.
