Was just thinking about this yesterday as I was listening to some 80's punk last night. Nowadays Techno seems to be the "in" thing. I was just wondering how many people out there on Dave's like the stuff and whether you think it's music.
When I listen to the stuff, I tend to think it's not music. A techno "song" seems to have no distinct parts like a chorus. Seems to be just an abstract collage of interesting sounds. People get excited over it applauding and cheering the club djs.
I like Techno, but prefer musicians and singers.

They're called 'tunes'!

Most of the time this is due to them being under the influence of mind-bending chemicals.

For a true education, I'd recommend taking some pure MDMA, going to a big warehouse party with a decent soundsystem and good lightshow (especially strobes man), and listening to some thumping tunes. |

Couldn't you say the same thing about classical music, jazz? I like vocalists and guitars as well, but sometimes you don't need words.
Techno is a bit ambiguous too - there's a lot of different genres out there. Try this site for an overview.

As it has grown as a genre, there's bound to be more interesting stuff, and also more crap.
Sasha's Involver is one of the best albums I've ever listened to, and I'm not that big on techno music. It's mellow, hypnotic, with a lot of variety between tracks. It beefs up towards the end and has one of the best closing tracks to a techno set I've ever heard. On top of that, it's done completely on a digital platform (Ableton Live), which is pretty unique.
It's easy to find online, check it out.
He's actually playing at the Kayagum Hall Walker Hill this Saturday. If you're curious about the genre, that would be a good place to start. |

Just because you dont like it or it dosnt fit your idea of how a song should be structured, doesnt make it not music. Many genres of music have "songs" that arent structured like what you think a song should be.
Yes its music. I dont like it though. |

It's definitely music!!! C'mon! Don't you realise that about every 10 years in the 20th century a style of music came along that everyone dismissed as,
"That's not music!!
That's just noise!!
Now in my day we had real music....blah, blah...."
I thought we had all realized that each generation see's their music as superior to the next generations.
Personally, I believe standing in a street and just listening is music too.
Don't be a Grandad before your time!! |

I hate reading Dev's OPs, the bruising to my ocular cavities caused by my rolling out of control eyes is just no fun. |

Still, he didn't attack Korea in some way this time, which is a bit different atleast! |

considering "techno" has been around maybe 20 years can we say LATE!
if you read up on the origins of this music you would see that it originally emerged out of an african american subculture with influences as disparate as P-Funk and european producers such as giorgio moroder
of course as dance music there is less emphasis on melody and more on the groove
a lot of "techno" producers have done more "musical" pieces with live muscians and vocalists
Sasha is certainly someone at the more commercial end of the dance spectrum - not a good place to start any serious exploration of this music |

My problem with " tecno' is that it doesnt spark emotions or feelings, just base anamalism, bumping to the beats.
When i hear an old song, I think of that time in my life. Lyrics can be interpreted to have meaning that corresponds to your life.
Years from now will old married couples in their seventies say " dear, remember when we first met, they are playing our song, get out the glow sticks and pacifiers" oonsa oonsa oonsa |

Funny, but true...
I get soppy and teary listening to some old hip-hop and early electronic music...
Herbie Hancock, New Order, Afrika Bambatta, etc etc
It was the music I was listening to at a certain point of my life - that's all it needs to be nostalgic. |

True. I listen to techno on the bus in the morning to get me going for the day, its definitely not the deepest music around.
Most of my friends back home that are really into techno and other dance music, god bless their souls, arent the deepest people either, and are probably happier for it. There is that old saying that its 'simple music for simple people', which i dont agree with totally.
I think when people refer to techno, they mean a different thing depending on where they are from as well.....
There is some techno which kind of gets you thinking. One tune with amazing lyrics that reminds me of 'that time in my life' is Miss Kittin and the Hacker - 'You and Us' .

Yeah, I get kinda lost with the terms Techno, Trance, Electronica...
The closest I get would be The Crystal Method, but I think they are a mix of styles, not really sold to one or the other. Paul Oakenfold, some DJ Shadow... |
