|
|
I know it's impossible to stop experienced computer users / hackers from copying CDs BUT I now find myself in a position where I would like to at least discourage casual "copiers".
I have searched Dave's and other internet sites but they only seem to be interested in circumventing protection, not installing it.
Can anyone tell me how to protect CDs. Ideally I would like to use 'Freeware'.
Hope some one can point me in the right direction. |

Do you want to use an encryption program? I have a program that makes "boxes" which appear as hard drives when mounted. As long as the computer you are using has the software installed, you can access your files. Burn the program on the disk with your files, and that makes it pretty much useable on all systems.
If that is what you are looking for, I can mail you the program. |

I have done some searching, and it seems there isn't much out there that is free for protection systems.
Hexalock looks ok, but again, it's not free. Sorry mate. I haven't enough time to put into this for you, but it does indeed seem that you had best pay for software that works. I honestly assume that any freeware avaliable would be too easily broken by anyone with a desire to do so. Good luck on your venture and if you would, please PM me the details of your program. Just for interest, of course. I have no intention of ripping you off.
Good luck. |

Are you looking to "protect" your information on cd's? That's easy enough. Just download an ecryption program (ie. Stuffit, Winzip, etc.). Lock the files in the CD instead of trying to lock the CD itself. That'd be the easiest and most cost efficient way. |

CL, he is looking for actual on-cd protection so that when he sends out his software (CD), it won't easily be copied. Like games and other softwares.
However, one should bear in mind that there isn't a copy protection out there that isn't easily broken, save Starforce, and I doubt the OP has the capital for that.
It's good that they are interested in protection, which lead me to wonder what they are writing? |

Good question. Hey, what ARE you writing that you want to protect? Inquiring minds want to know! |

I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag but you are welcome to guess. Hey, that should make an interesting topic !!!
I'll give you a hint, though. When it's finished and is on the market it will sell for AU$10 plus postage. So you can see that I'm not going to make a million dollars. Unless I sell 100,000 CDs and that's not going to happen. |

| You are fighting a losing battle if you want to protect a CD. There are many ways to circumvent copy protection. Just my 5 cents. |
