My friend is taking a 10-hour flight tomorrow, so I asked the pharmacist what she could take in order to sleep on the plane. She gave us a box that was alarmingly cheap-- a mere 1000 won.

It's called (and I apologize for the Romanization, but this keyboard doesn't have Korean) Ja Mi Sul (sounds like a soju label doesn't it? Smile ). It comes in a long green box, and contains 10 tablets. She's supposed to take one.

In brackets underneath it reads .. oh nevermind. I'm going to type this up on another computer. Anyway, she leaves tomorrow, so if you recognize this product and have any recommendations for or against, they would be much appreciated.

You can actually buy Unisom at the airport pharmacy.

On a few occasions I've had pharmacists refuse to sell any kind of chemical sleep aid to me. Instead, they offered some of their hocus-pocus ancient herbal Chinese remedies (Rhino horn mixed with dried frog bolloks, etc.) with a sleep mask.

Snagged a few Xanax for my flight back from the states a few weeks ago, and slept a full 8 hours...it was superb.

I've suffered insomnia in the past and have used the OTC Zalden or Aron which are mild hypnotics. However, feeling unsure about the consequences of long-term use, I recently switched to melatonin, which made for a much better night's sleep. If you are flying though, a trip to the doc's for a xanax script is straightforward here.
