One in five British children cannot find the UK on a map of the world, a magazine's research suggests.

National Geographic Kids said it also found fewer than two thirds of children were able to correctly locate the US.

The magazine, which questioned more than 1,000 six to 14-year-olds, said it found several London children did not know they lived in England's capital.

Teachers' union the NASUWT said the findings were "nonsense" and did not reflect staff and pupils' hard work.

National Geographic Kids also discovered 86% of the children interviewed failed to identify Iraq and one in 10 could not name a single continent.

Boys seemed to show a slightly better geographical knowledge than girls, with 65% able to locate a number of countries around the world compared with 63% of girls.

Scottish children appeared to be the most geographically aware with 67% able to point out the most countries, out of England, the US, France, China and Iraq, on a world map.

Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at Buckingham University, said the findings were "rather frightening".

"These results underline the need for education to concentrate on the essentials.

"How are children going to be able to get as much out of their life if they fail to have an understanding of the shape of the world?"

I found this surprising. I wouldn't expect the figures to be so high.

99% of British six to 14-year-olds know where the clitoris is? What the hell is going on in your head, laogaiguk? Is this some kind of eminem reference?

So the study done by National Geographic shows that kids need to focus more on geography? Not suspicious a'tall!

The lack of geographical study is an international problem. The sooner it's sorted out, the better.

Not to hijack the thread, but on the subject of education, I found this hilarious.

Quote:
MINCO, Okla. -- One of Oklahoma's nominees for state superintendent of education has proposed a unique idea for protecting students from outbreaks of violence.

Bill Crozier, a Union City Republican going against incumbent Democrat Sandy Garrett, said he believes old textbooks could be used to stop bullets shot from weapons wielded by school intruders.

If elected, he said he would put thick used textbooks under every desk for students to use in self-defense.

Quote:
"We need to look at protection of young people that sometimes people may think you are a little smarter than everybody else or a higher IQ or whatever. They need to look at what the end result would be," Crozier said.

Hard to know what to think without a whole lot more detailed information. I mean, are they learning different stuff now due to changed priorities in the curriculum, or are they just learning less of what they were already learning? That's the question I would ask first, because they are two different issues.

That's not that bad, I've had people who thought Chicago was a suburb of Boston. I'm sure those kids at least knew that the UK was the country they lived in.

Did you know that if you take an outline map of a country and blow it up or reduce it in size, that many people cannot identify it as being the same place? It has to do with spatial abilities. Some people are much better at it than others.

Many people? Really? People will see lots of different sized maps over time.

Does this correlate to the obesity epidemic? I'm betting at least 20% of British kids couldn't find their own nipples with a map.

It would be interesting to see the results in terms of age. Geographical knowledge differs greatly from age 6 to 14. Maybe the 20% were all the six and seven year olds. Maybe all the kids from age 8 and up scored perfectly. Maybe they weren't careful with the selection and chose a higher number of older kids in Scotland. Of course this is all speculation without knowing their research methods...

when these kind of threads come out about America it's all "tut tut, I knew they were idiots". one comes out about the british and it's all "hmmm, let's look at the methodology." I don't see why canadians, in their eagerness to be non-american, have to be sycophantic towards some crummy island like england.

let's face it, the british are dumb. they still have a queen for god's sakes. it's the 21st century and they've still got some old lady playing dress up.
