The lack of geographical study is an international problem. The sooner it's sorted out, the better.

Hard to know what to think without a whole lot more detailed information. I mean, are they learning different stuff now due to changed priorities in the curriculum, or are they just learning less of what they were already learning? That's the question I would ask first, because they are two different issues.

That's not that bad, I've had people who thought Chicago was a suburb of Boston. I'm sure those kids at least knew that the UK was the country they lived in.

Did you know that if you take an outline map of a country and blow it up or reduce it in size, that many people cannot identify it as being the same place? It has to do with spatial abilities. Some people are much better at it than others.

It would be interesting to see the results in terms of age. Geographical knowledge differs greatly from age 6 to 14. Maybe the 20% were all the six and seven year olds. Maybe all the kids from age 8 and up scored perfectly. Maybe they weren't careful with the selection and chose a higher number of older kids in Scotland. Of course this is all speculation without knowing their research methods...

when these kind of threads come out about America it's all "tut tut, I knew they were idiots". one comes out about the british and it's all "hmmm, let's look at the methodology." I don't see why canadians, in their eagerness to be non-american, have to be sycophantic towards some crummy island like england.

let's face it, the british are dumb. they still have a queen for god's sakes. it's the 21st century and they've still got some old lady playing dress up.
